I would highly recommend anyone that is broadcast seed (not drilling) get that seed on the ground before Friday night. Looks like another good rain should sweep across the state Friday night through Saturday morning, but then we will go through a dry period that might last 10 days and possibly longer.

I have a very small lease and for sure no tractor but I have a rake or two, some healthy 15-year-old twin boys, and a bag of mixed seed. So Labor Day after setting up a second ground blind we found a flat spot with some sunshine, cut down some brush, raked raked raked raked sowed by hand, cover tamp cover tamp cover tamp and the place got rained on within an hour. Our Plot is miniscule compared to what is posted and I know for sure the ground needs lime, but we shall see what happens next, and I will get pictures, no matter the results. I figure, ya' gotta start somewhere.

Im planting in the morning, I might plant everything I have left but I am concerned about no rain in the 10 day after that. Definitely could cause issues. I will likely plant everything that Im disking and covering but nothing that Im just "throwing and growing".

The upside is that, if your area received a lot of rain over the last week like many areas did, the soil has absorbed a lot of water. The surface may dry out and form a crust, but I don't think root-zone soil moisture will be a problem for some time.

Sure am glad I planted 8/25-26th! We have had over 2 1/4 inches of rain since planted. Some more on the way friday evening - saturday morning. Should be rockin to kill a doe on opening weekend! Might try to find a white oak dropping close to some thickets for an older deer. All depends on my time availability

I understand everyone's concern, but it seems like a person kinda has to take a chance when planting a plot. Similar to planting a vegetable garden. Folks who planted plots and gardens long before the availability of extended forecasts did also. We can't change the weather and I know everyone wants to plant at the perfect time and all. I'd say don't wait, like BSK says, plant now.
I put mine out on Aug 29 and its just started to sprout. I walked down there today and there were 3 fat cottontail rabbits eating their fill.

West tn looks to get a soaking I'll take all I can get at this point. I have been watching the radar for the last hour and keeping my fingers crossed. I really hope it does not breakup right before it gets to me and reform just east of me like it has the last two nights.

I should have spread seed on Tues. Been too wet since then, just didn't feel like I could spread seed without rutting the yard up. Guess I'll wait, and if we don't get rain I'll put out the sprinklers.

Got my wheat and oats in last night. Looks like we are getting a little rain. I tore up the ground pretty good first and broadcasted. I was hoping for a hard rain to beat it in for me a little. If not, I guess the boys and I can have a good dove shoot on Sunday afternoon. Planting cover crops is considered a normal agricultural practice isn't it?

My rain gauge showed 1.2" this morning, I am grateful. That is the best rain I have received here at my house in at least six months, if not longer.

Got about half of mine in friday and with good ground moisture not concerned about rain for awhile . I will plant the rest asap and feel good about germination and growth even with no rain for awhile . July and August were above normal rain and great ground moisture for this time of year , best in years .

Got everything out about 18:00 last night. Got a light rain a couple hours ago, but may not be enough. Hoping this edge will dip ever so slightly south of I-81 and hit me.

We planted this am with the ground damp. Was loads of fun with it being gumbo mud.But on the up side as wet as the ground was im sure 80 % of it will sprout before it gets eaten by the 200 doves we saw.

Didn't make it. I'm going to till this weekend then again during the week then sit back and wait. The past few years I've planted in mid-October with fine results, so I'm not too panicked yet. This past week was perfect, though.

Although there is a moderate chance of light showers Saturday, it looks like the next substantial rain won't get here until the following Thursday (9/20).

I know that you look at several different models to make your predictions, but it's amazing how Accuweather's long range forecast seems to be spot on here lately. I've gotten where I don't pay any attention to the Weather Channel anymore...

The Weather Channel is the worst at forecasting. Accuweather is OK, but not anywhere near as good as just the raw model data. All these forecasting groups use the same model data, but then interpret it using their own methods. Their accuracy would go up dramatically if they would just use the raw model data without manipulating it further.

Bryan, is this a stupid question:
Where do you find the raw model data?

You can find it many places, but I prefer using the College of DuPage website. Of all of the models available, I prefer the GFS model.

Although there is a moderate chance of light showers Saturday, it looks like the next substantial rain won't get here until the following Thursday (9/20).
If that works out, it would actually be perfect for me.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for it to rain thursday and friday before bow season. Although, there would probably be 3X's as many acorns on the ground. Areas scouted for specific trees would be extinguished due to many other trees dropping. But it looks like it will cool off afterwards

Always "iffy" to trust the models out at 8-10 days, but currently they suggest a powerful cold front coming through for opening day.

The accuracy out to about 7 days has gotten remarkably better in the last few years, but if you watch the models daily, you would find a lot of differences in the forecasts in the 8-10 day range each day, indicating major changes in the outcome of the computations for each model run.

I'm hoping for the cold front and rain! I just looked on 3 different sites and their all completely different! I need it to rain good and long this weekend or Thursday but one of them needs to happen!

Models now suggest rain Sunday, Tuesday and a big rain Friday before season opens.

Big dip in the jet stream is forecast to sit over the Eastern US all next week, and that means fronts can sweep down into the area frequently.

Models now suggest rain Sunday, Tuesday and a big rain Friday before season opens. That would work for my lease. We'll be planting down there tomorrow and Saturday. Haven't had time to disc the plot behind my house so I guess it will have to wait. It's more of a fun thing anyway and not really for hunting although I will let my son shoot one if he wants to.

Might plant Saturday if that weather prediction comes true. Light rains Sunday and Tuesday with a big one on Friday would be perfect.
