We conducted a black bear DNA population survey up there this summer and we're still awaiting the results. Given the fact that the public survey showed that folks in that area were supportive of having bears around we decided to hold off on a hunt until next yer when we have a better handle on how many bears can be taken without hurting the resource. I'm fairly certain we'll entertain a Cumberland Plateau bear hunt next year. In the meantime, any landowner experiencing damage from bears can request a depredation permit. We want to make sure no landowners are negatively impacted by their presence.

When you say Cumberland plateau counties, would that include Morgan? We're seeing more and more of them too. They don't bother me but wouldn't pass up the chance to hunt one here.

Thats kind of cool that the bears are spreeding and that there may be other countys that allow hunts.

I disagree, there's not much anything cool about them when all they do is destroy things on your property like breaking off multiple fruit trees about 2ft off the ground that were a year away from producing fruit that were approx $30-$40/ea. Not to mention the tripod feeder that was destroyed, the PVC feeders that have gone missing or are torn down weekly, then there was one of my trail cameras that a bear chomped into. Yep, nothing cool about them - I hate them!

Does the TWRA use quota hunts or short seasons to manage bears?

All of our existing bear hunts are non-quota, meaning they are open to everyone. We do have a Party Dog hunt area that is regulated by quota but that is Cherokee WMA specific.

I was told my Morgan Co's WO that the plateau counties would be getting a bear hunt in the coming years, and he told me it would be a open hunt, open to everyone, but each county would have a set number of bears to be taken. He gave an example, like Morgan Co might only have a 10 bear quota,Fentress might have a 15 bear quota, and Scott co might have a 20 bear quota and so on..And he said that once that quota number has been reached for that county, then all hunting will be stopped and season will be over for that county. He said there would be a grace period, that might allow each county to go over the quota by maybe 3 bears or so.But wasn't exactly sure on the grace number.
