Its amazing to me that someone from the agency hasn't already stepped up and offered to spend a few hours of their time to help this young man! There are plenty of great people within TWRA. Come on surely this won't be a show-stopper for an eager outdoorsman.

Have you checked other areas of the state?

Buy him the Apprentice License this year.

Keeps him from having to get the Hunters Safety Course this year, gives you a full year to get him the course.

Surely you can get something done by then.
Drive to Bass Pro or somewhere for an 8 hour, one-day course somewhere during that time.

Tell his dad he is "sick" one weekend and take him. Or you could have him ask in advance if he can go do something with one of his friends and take him. Just get his dad to switch his weekend with you guys without telling him what the real reason for the switch is.

Backwudz,
The TWRA does not schedule the Hunter Safety courses. They are run by volunteers, and the schedules are set by those instructors, and the information is passed on to the TWRA to be posted publicly.

Class schedules are as varied as the instructors. We are currently finishing a class that was set for two consecutive Tuesday/Thursday evenings, including the live fire and testing. If you will keep tabs on the schedules for your region, chances are you will eventually find one that fits your needs.

The online courses allow your kids to go through the course at their own pace. It is still time consuming, and though the student misses out on the hands-own benefits of the traditional class, there are video clips and a good interactive program that maintains interest. At the end of an online course there is a test, but understand that this test is NOT the Hunter Safety qualification test, merely a test that proves the student has completed the online course. It must be printed out and brought to an Online Course Field Day, which generally takes place in a few hours on a weekend, including live fire and the test. Warning: there are multiple sites offering online courses, and several will charge you $25 or more to print out your results, so do your homework before selecting the course.

Now if you are caught in the time crunch of needing him certified NOW, you will probably need to look into the $10 Apprentice License as a stop-gap, and continue searching for the course that fits your needs.

*I am NOT employed by the TWRA, merely a Hunter Safety Volunteer Instructor, AKA Noob.
