Just realized how cheap it is running my boat, not including gas in the truck to pull the boat. I am putting ethanol free gas in my tank for my 5 horse B&S air cooled outboard even though it is just a lawnmower motor. today I topped off the 3 gallon tank after last week's trip. ethanol free gas was 3.99/gal and I paid $4.17 to refill the tank. Basically ran the boat over 25 miles (measured) over the course of a whole day, mostly at full throttle, for a gallon of gas, ain't bad. Pushes my boat somewhere in the 10-12 mph range which aint bad for a small tin. Some day I may get a motor that will put my boat on a full plane, but I will run this B&S motor as long as it runs and it does the job great. Anyone else got a small tin boat and motor?

I get somewhere around 5 miles to the gallon running around 35 or 40 mph. When you add in the oil it gets costly. Enjoy it while you can. No way I would want a gas bill for running 60 or 70 up the lake.

it doesn't get you 25 miles to the gallon though does it? Whatever suits you. I've already gone more than a couple miles today... Fishing for rockfish at the moment, but to say I've caught fish I have already caught two nice carp today, do you want the pics of them? \:\)

I have a 14' Tracker Topper with a 15 HP Yamaha 2 stroke and a 6 gallon fuel tank. Its a nice setup for river fishing or in coves on the lake. It will run right at 30 MPH with me in it and 24 MPH with 2 people and hunting gear verified by GPS. I have run a mile upriver from the I-75 bridge in Loudon all the way to Kingston and back using 3.5 gallons of gas while fishing . That's the furthest I have run and I have no idea how far that is. I can fish the Clinch river around 6 different days running up river and then floating downstream all day before needing to fill up again. It's nice having a motor that can get you where you want to go without spending a bunch of money on gas.

I just sold a rig similar to yours, had a six horse Johnson and did great! You better hang on to that Briggs, they are GREAT little engines. I just got to have a bigger boat to take my kids with me...

Yeah Catman I have an Optimax motor. It will push my boat 45 or so with me and 42 or 43 with 2 guys by GPS. It's not but a 90 on the Lowe HP model in 17 foot. It gets as good of gas mileage as the 50 Mercury I had on the other boat.

small tin? dang I just saw two tin boats today, one with a 115 and one with a 140 and they both were pretty huge for a jon boat by my standards... big and wide, and they both went as shallow as my skinny 14 ft tin boat.

I think with a 200 horse your boat must be almost as wide as the duck river.

Na,dont need to see any pics of carp.Sometimes in life, comfort and usability are more important than how cheap you can get by with.Ive fished in some storms at Dale Hollow, catching fish, and was very glad I was in a Bass Boat,a small john boat would have been very unpleasant.

Dont know about mileage, never seen a boat with an odometer on it,but it does very well.

there's one thing my boat would not do well with, a bad storm... still it serves its purpose well and doesn't cost me much to operate.

is it a flat bottom? I saw a boat the other day with a 140 horse and the boat was a big and wide flat bottom, he said it would run in 1.5 ft of water with the motor trimmed up and the boat itself draft only 8 inches. Oh and that motor at low speeds was quieter than my little 5 horse \:D

I have done all of the above except the cane poles.... one time I caught a load of worms and put one on the hook, sight casted to and caught a 6 lb buffalo... of course you probably don't even consider that a real fish, because it's not an almighty bass....

No its not a flat bottom. It is a Delta Pad with a 6 degree deadrise. It also has lifting/turning strakes and a reverse chine. It drafts 7-8 inches of water and easily runs in 4 inches.

sounds like a beast if it can run that shallow, mine won't do 4 inches of water but if I'm that shallow I just get out and drag the boat. Lol

I grew up wading and floating small rivers and creeks. The Harpeth, Swan, Piney, Buffalo and Lick creek. I have done my share of dragging. I'm no good at it anymore. I prefer to drive to my spots now. Its easier on a tired back.

they don't interest me much either, because they don't bite much and hardly fight at all. I've seen uglier fish too. But it is rewarding to have a buffalo bite your bait or lure because it usually takes a lot of effort. I pretty much ignore them except for the fly south carp tourney.

hey if you ever are not having luck with the smallies and felt like wasting your time catching a carp I would gladly show you how... They aint pretty but they are very smart fish and fight like a freight train

you must have snagged a buffalo or something, I have never had a carp fight like a huge turd, they always run out a lot of your line and try to get caught in sunken timber. I snagged a buffalo with a shad rap while trolling this summer. Thought that was kind of funny, and unlikely.

If you are catching huge turds, I would look for some different water to fish. What were you using for bait?? Corn??

I not talking about how they fight, just the feeling of seeing that nasty thing, just like a huge turd.Cant remember ever fishing with corn btw,and as far as knowing how to fish with bait,Id say Im good at that, just never actually targeted a carp, cant imagine why anyone would when there are actual game fish to catch with bait like rockfish and blue cats, flatheads etc.

Oh yeah,I rarely fish with crank baits, maybe 10% of the time.

I wouldn't argue with your bass fishing knowledge but me personally, I would hate to restrict my fishing to only one or two species. There are too many fish swimming in the water and a lot of them ae worth catching to me. I wouldn't be at all surprised if a carp is a smarter animal than a smallmouth bass.

Fish for whatever you want, why are you worried about what I fish for?I like fishing for bass, especially smallmouth,I just like it.A carp being smarter?Dont know, hard to believe a vegeterian would be smarter than a meat eating predator \:\)

I am not worried about what you fish for, but as for carp being smarter, if you had fished for them like I do, you might know what I am talking about. Just cause something is a predator doesn't make it smarter. Carp are far from vegetarians too \:D they eat quite a bit of bugs and crawfish in their diet.

Not to mention if you really want a challenge, gar fishing is a blast! Those guys will put up a fight like a freight train. Very fun to catch

my biggest gar was under 6 lbs and they fight vicious but not as hard as some of the carp I have caught. A 4 lb common carp will outfight a 4 lb longnose gar. But gar are definitely a challenge to get a hook set in their jaws.

Never caught an alligator gar in SC. I have caught a bunch of BIG long nose gar. I had one at the boat on Santee that would have probably hit 70 or 80 pounds. He decided to make a run and broke my line.

70 or 80 pounds, dang, I think that is bigger than the world record for a longnose.

I have no clue what the record is. This fish was a good 5 foot plus long. It looked like a log as it rolled up beside the boat. I have no clue how I would have got him in the boat since my net would not have held him. it was one of those times I wish I had braided line instead 60 pound mono. Sad part is he broke the line instead of cutting it. I probably should have gave him line but I had played him all the way to the boat and wasn't expecting a run like he made. Never had a fish break 60 pound mono and I've caught some big cats and really horsed them to the boat.

Took a pretty good spill to the bottom of the boat when the line broke.

Dang that's a good size gar, but 5 ft including the snout wouldn't go 70 pounds, still very big for a longnose. I watched a buddy of mine catch one just shy of 4 feet in the Harpeth River (I regret the decision to tell him to come down there when I found a bunch of big gar sitting in a pool). So he knows what a 4 foot gar looks like in the water, and says that one day he saw one that would easily go 5 ft drifting down the river one day. Remember the Harpeth River is hardly more than a creek with a few deep holes. I have never seen a 5 footer and my buddy only saw one once or twice, so they must be very smart, elusive fish that rarely show themselves near the surface. I would love to catch one. Haven't even caught a 4 footer yet. I don't usually target gar because I got bored with the small ones, and that's mostly what I catch when I fish for them. If I ever find a 4 or 5 footer sitting near the surface, I do what I can to catch it. A minnow, live or dead, dragged right in front of their snout is deadly. Hooking the fish is the biggest challenge.

I've caught a bunch of 40 plus pound gar on steel leaders with a banjo minnow... Don't laugh, they will kill them. I know this fish was nearly double what those fish were. It's hard to tell the length of them when they are so big in body size. That's why I said 5 foot plus. Trust me, this fish was well over 50 pounds. I looked up the record a minute ago and this one woubokhara beoke it. Of course i Wouldn't have known that then and probably would have turned it back loose. That would have sucked.

We use to catch them on Santee that were gloss black... Had a shine to them. I wish I had some pictures of them. They were really pretty fish but would cut the heck out of you if you let them loose in the boat. My wife caught one on a fluke back in June on Santee while we were on vacation. Braided line. It cut both of my legs when it got loose.

that's pretty cool. I caught a relatively small one on a fluke a couple weeks ago. For the size hook it was a lucky catch.

they will cut you too. I have very few cuts from gar but it has happened, I think the worst was strangely from getting tail slapped in the arm several years ago. Nothing serious though. I heard their gill plates can give you a nasty cut. Not happened to me yet. Also I have never been bit. But then I haven't caught any over 4 feet.

I love the black ones. I have seen so many and always wanted to catch one, but am always fishing for something else and like I said I don't target gar often enough. When I first started fishing at age 11, my dad and I were on the bank of the harpeth and I was learning to fish with worms under a bobber and we looked across the water and saw a 4 foot, solid black log floating in the water... well it also happened to have moving fins on it. I think there may have been another normal colored one too. Some canoeists floated by and we asked what kind of fish it was that we had seen, and they said it was a gar. That was the first time I ever saw or heard of one. But that was back when I didn't know any species of fish other than goldfish \:D that brings back memories thinking of that. I won't ever forget the sight of that gar.... first fish I ever saw in the harpeth river while fishing, and it was a beast of a fish.
