Squirrel Hunting @ Standing Stone

Hello all,
I'm a new hunter this season, and I'm going to be starting off trying to hunt squirrel (and maybe some rabbit).
I was looking through the TN hunting guide for this year at the WMA's in my area, and came to the realization that I'm only about 30 minutes away from Standing Stone State Forest.
I've read that pretty much any large forest with hardwoods is a decent place for squirrel hunting, does this hold true for Standing Stone?
Also, is there anything I should know about hunting Standing Stone in general?

Never been to Standing Stone. Isn't that on the Cumberland Plateau? If it's got a good deal of hardwood, it's probably a solid squirrel hunting area. You need some open and edge areas for rabbits. You'll likely find both at Standing Stone. Take your squirrel gun and scout a little. You'll probably be glad you did.

I went the 25th looking for squirrel. I heard some and saw a couple but couldnt get a shot. Too many leaves still on the trees for my liking.

I haven't been anywhere near standing stone but I can say that squirrels love hardwoods, and my personal favorite trees are hickories, but they will be in oaks and others as well and just keep both eyes and ears open for squirrels on the ground or up in the trees. I like to slowly and quietly walk around while scanning the whole forest for signs of movement. Look for the bushy tail flicking in the trees... I recommend a shotgun for getting started, don't have to worry about a precise aim on a moving squirrel, just point at the head and shoot. Good luck, squirrel hunting is fun
