i have always tried to get atleast 3 years out of my clover plots but it takes spraying and bushhogging many times which is espensive. i have just began to wonder if i would be better off just resowing every year? cheaper that is.

I don't plant perennial clovers for that very reason. Much cheaper and less time-consuming to just replant annuals every year.

I do both, more food for more months out of the year. Not really that much work for the trade-off.

bsk, but are the benefits of clover worth the extra time and money? i have all the equipment and it isnt that much trouble but i was just thinking it would be cheaper to replant. so you dont sow any clover?

I use a mixture of annual clovers that last from September into July.

Over the years I've worked to establish mostly Durana clover and strive to manage less toward perfect/pure stands of forage and toward a bit of diversity. These areas are still a vast majority of clover, but simple periodic mowing and lighter application of selective herbicides are far less expensive and time consuming for me. Seems to support a greater diversity of wildlife as well vs. only deer.

It cost me more to establish but once in place it's been less labor intensive, less costly, and less impact to the environment.

Crimson and arrowleaf. If I want to stretch out the productivity of an annual plot through all of the summer months, I broadcast alyceclover (not a true clover, but a good late summer annual) into the plot in spring.
