You might laugh at that picture, but in south Dakota, we used to do that with ear corn and set out about 10 rolls of alfalfa hay in the river bottom when we left after gun season.
Come spring, those rolls were destroyed and the corn piles nothing but shucks, but then again, the winters get kind of rough up there!

I know a guy that used to put out a pile that big in Lakeland, TN. He didn't hunt, but said that it was just to keep the deer off his ornamental shrubs. I saw a couple of 150+ bucks hitting on it.
