Was wondering why dove opener is 12 noon. I was told "tradition" but given no background.

Was curious what the tradition was that had dove season opener at noon.

I truly don't know but I've been asking around. Best reason I heard so far is that most rural families were up at the crack of dawn working in the fields, a noon opener gave them a chance to start when everyone else did.

That's interesting, Big Game Guy. I always assumed it was for safety purposes... My thinking being that the opener would see an abundance of hunters and the last thing you want is someone slinging lead your direction in the pre-dawn light.

Your explanation makes more sense.

Rabbit and quail both started on Thanksgiving for a very long time. I can remember checking rabbit and bird hunters all day long on Thanksgiving in the late seventies-early eighties. I doubt that I would check that number in the entire season now. It was a very big deal prior to TN really getting deer.

Traditionally dove and squirrel season opened on Sept. 1 and you could hunt both openers due to the noon dove start. It has not been too many years ago that TWRA advocated opening both dove and squirrel the fourth Sat. in September at sunrise. There was a group of hunters that attended the TWRC season setting meeting at Jackson that had enough clout to convince the commision that the traditional Sept 1 noon opening time be kept.
This was also the meeting that tnbow (Jeff C) presented his case for using dogs to hunt hogs.

Squirrel season has opened on a Saturday in late August for over 40 years. When I was in 4-H I had to miss opening day because we were having competitions at the Cookeville Fair. When I was 7-8 I remember going to the Dixie Cafe in Byrdstown and the resturant being crowded at 5am with people squirrel hunting opening day. Always on Saturday because I couldn't miss school.

For years I've advocated a sunrise dove opening day. As far as I can tell it's only at noon because of tradition. My reasoning:

1)Generally opening day is hot and the birds don't fly that well until late afternoon.
2)Every day after opener is at sunrise.
3)Hunters and dogs suffer the heat.
4)It doesn't take but one good cold front with rain to migrate the birds and absolutely kill a dove field. In most cases when that happens it's late afternoon into the evening. That can and does ruin opening day afternoon hunting and all hunts following. In mornings that's less likely to happen. As much time and effort that go into preparing a dove field from spring until opening day it's a shame to miss an opportunity to get one good hunt on it and it does happen. I've been there more than once.
