Dove season always opens at noon.

I was told it was tradition but no background.

Anybody know how the Noon on Saturday tradition got started?

I was told that the tradition started because it would be noon before the hunters could get over their hangover from the traditions from the night before. I'm not saying that is why but it makes sense.

So there is no REAL tradition behind the noon opener?

I always wondered if they worried about when September 1st fell on a Sunday and perhaps they did not want church services diturbed.

There is a great deal of traditon to the noon openers. If you go to some of the older sporting literature such as Ruark, you will see several stories about the afternoon shoots.

Dove hunting has been the most "social" of any southern hunting for probably over a hundred years. Unlike some of the northern states where the whitetail opener is the big social deal, there have always been more cookouts scheduled around dove hunts than any other hunting in the south. I, too, have heard/read that the tradition got its start to allow working folks to get their work done and be part of the shoot.

And, it has always been a big melting pot deal where the "common man" shot beside the well-to do with his Purdys, and credit was given for wing shooting skill rather than the price of the guns. Check out Ruarks "The old Man and the Boy", and "The Old Man's Boy Grows Older" to get a great feel for this century old tradition.

In addition, the federal framework for many, many years specified that the dove season could not open before noon on Sept. 1. Our dove biologist thought that was still in effect this year, but after I told him about the sunrise opener in NC he said he would have to double check.

My guess is that our Commission would be tarred and feathered if they messed with our traditional noon opener even if they could. In the south, including TN the cookouts and food often overshadow the hunts themselves. I see no sign that is changing.

These should be prerequisites for all hunters wether they dove hunt or not.

Thanks SCN>

I figured it was something neat like that. Just hadn't heard the stories.
