I would seriously like to start looking into the OTC tags for the White River and Gunnison National Forest Units. Good news is I have a friend that lives close to Vail, he is not a hunter but hikes a lot. So its good to have a place to get some RandR or at least have someone trust worthy in case you run into a problem.

The way Iook at DIY hunts like this are simple, if I can get into a beautiful area with limited human intrusion and a decent chance of getting into some game then I am all about it. I love to backpack and if I can carry a weapon to chase game around then even better, if I kill something that just makes it a bonus. Of course I want a trophy and definetly some freezer meat but Im pretty content with the experience.

I would love to spend 2 weeks out there, surely in that time frame one could figure something out. I have hiked in the Rocky Mountain NP, so the 10,000 feet elevation is no joke but makes for some nice camping weather!

I think with 3 guys total if you camp. I think you could do a diy antelope hunt for right at $1000 per person that is tag,gas split between three guys, and food for camp. May be a little more little less.

I embark on a very easy to obtain tag (area 23) yet very tough public land access area next week. I will give you a quick right up on how it goes. Im muley hunting the week after, so the antelope tag was a last minute decision.

I did scout a lot of deer region F and area 53 in R. Both regions had ample public ground, but deer sightings were low. It is very warm here in WY and forest fires are just now starting to die down. So far F has my vote, for late season of course, because R just seems to "iffy" for such a short season plus the winter kill reduced quality and quantity a bit I heard. I seen plenty of doe deer in each region, plus lots of trophy pronghorns, albeit the area in deer R is archery only and the areas in deer F are 3 plus points to draw a tag!

Once I get back I will give a brief write up.

FYI,
The short season for R is a typo. I just read that it is Oct 15-31
