now the one I have seen has a stick in it that you stick in the meat what is the difference from that and the can you just kind of scan it over the meat ?

You need INTERNAL temp of most meats. A thermometer which gives you the outside temp of the meat wont tell you when its done.
Thermopen rocks!
My thick cut steaks, roasts, pork shoulders, tenderloins all come out exactly the way I want them now. No guessing. I would say it has improved my cooking by 70% !

I couldn't cook chicken without it. I can't see the color difference when a recipe states to cook until juices run clear.
Thermapen is awesome! It is quick and accurate.
