12 bucks? what kind of hickory is this, a shellbark? The kind with the walnut sized nuts?

Google mammoth hickory
such as this? http://www.kellynurseries.com/detail.asp?pid=4647

It's a shellbark, I know of several around the mid. TN area. I can tell when I am near one when I see those extra large hulls lying on the ground. the bark though is very similar to shagbark. Cracking a shellbark nut is tough though, but the nut meat tastes good like a shagbark.

Around 7 each on that website. Not bad money. I am collecting all I can
no kidding I had no idea they could sell for that much. But where do you find the buyers? I would rather eat them then go through the hassle, unless I was able to find someone who would buy them.

craigslist, ebay etc.. I sold some MOSO bamboo that I had sprouted and grown from seed for 70 dollars to a guy on craigslist.

dang. If I happen to find a surplus I may go and try to sell a few. Still want to make the rest into a pie.

Forget hunting for squirrels. I'm hunting for shellbark hickory nuts!

I've got 2 shellbark hickories at my river house and they are loaded. I guess I better start picking up those nuts. Last weekend I bet there were a bushel of them on the ground...

shell bark nuts are the biggest hickory nuts but also the hardest to crack. Use a hammer not a nutcracker. If you can pick out enough of the nut meat then you got some good eating. I got a recipe for hickory nut pie in the cooking forum
