Do any of you guys hunt squirrel in the afternoon? I went out this afternoon not so much to just squirrel hunt but to also scout the dove field. Well neither showed any promise. I saw the southbound end of a northbound squirrel and that was the only one that I seen and was gone before I could get a shot. Also I seen 5 dove on 30 acres of harvested sun flower. Apparently dove season is going to be rough this year.

I did about the same thing this afternoon and saw no squirrels. Was in the woods for about 15-20 minutes though. Slapped enough seed ticks off and didn't see any critter activity so I called it quits. Tolerance level for seed ticks has gotten into the negative numbers. for squirrels I much prefer early morning with little or no wind. Last time I hunted the spot, was during spring season in the morning. During that trip I saw 3 squirrels and all 3 of them died. Not a lot but I usually see at least a couple in this spot, if I am there in the morning. But today I did see lots of fresh cut hickory nuts, just as expected. I will have to go back there soon in the early morning.

Just like any game animal. sometimes they are more active one day than the next. I've gone one day and not seen much then go back the next and they are all over the place. If your seeing plenty of sign they are still there, just give them a day or so. They do get more active in most instances later on in the day right before they head for their dens in the evening.
And yes, seed ticks and chiggers are bad this year. Be sure to spray your clothes down with permanone real well and you should be good to go.
