2 cutting on nuts or pine cones (probably on hickory nuts) 6 moving through the woods on the way to somewhere 1 barking at him to alert other squirrels of danger (aka "sounding the alarm")

yep, poser nailed it. both were cutting on hickories. i try to keep a running total on each hunt what each squirrel is doing and compile at the end of the season.

Good work!
Do you normally kill more travelers than cutters during the early season?
Seems I take more cutters (early season), but may just be my hunting style, which is in part a preference to shoot them cutting.

depends on the block i am hunting. in mixed forests, where there are few target trees it tends to be travelors. the block i am going tomorrow will most likely be cutters.

Do you have any "secrets" for getting ahead of the "travelers" you encounter?
Seems I often spook the travelers trying to get in front of their line of travel, or in trying to catch up with them.

Opening morning was odd for me. The squirrels just weren't moving, and it seemed like a perfect morning.
