My wife has shot doves with me for over 20yrs now but still has a problem hitting them and clays. I have always been big on mod chokes for them but I'm wondering if I need to open her on up to an improved. She shoots a 20ga and I don't know what her problem is, she gets mad when I start instructing to much, watch ur stance, get down on the barrel etc. What do you think?

Check her eye dominance. People who are cross dominant usually can't shoot a shotgun worth a crap. IMO opening up the choke won't all of a sudden mean more hits. The difference between mod and imroved cylinder isn't very much.

go with the heavy dove load & a imp cycl choke.unless there out there a ways the mod is a pretty tight group.i bought a 20g sa & pu mostly 7.5 & 2 boxs of 8's to try also as theres more pellets for a denser pattern.good luck to her

checked to dom eye years ago, had a problem with my son on that, left handed right eye dom, he now shoots right handed, we shoot 7.5s thought about 8s or 9s and the improved. Don't get me wrong she's a shooter, not gun shy at all, I just think she could be better and don't know how to help her improve.

Don't take this the wrong way, but the best thing you could do is have someone else instruct her. In no way am I referring to your teaching abilities, but I know that I have tried to explain some wingshooting/form to my wife and we end up getting pissy at each other. Someone else can tell her though, and she picks up on it easier. Saves us both a little grief.
Again its not you or your abilities, just the nature of couples. IMO.
An improved cylinder could'nt hurt. Like stated above, there is very little difference in mod vs. ic, but IMO wingshooting/clay shooting is more of a mental game than physical skill. Tell her the pattern is as big as a truck, and you might be surprised how well she starts hitting targets.

Just my opinion, but I think most people are hunting with TOO MUCH CHOKE.

And am saying this about MOST PEOPLE regardless of what small game/waterfowl they're hunting with a shotgun, but particularly in regard to novice turkey hunters. Tighter chokes can sometimes be an advantage, especially for those who shoot a lot and shoot regularly, but that is not MOST PEOPLE out hunting.

I'd recommend going with the improved cylinder choke for your wife AND loading with #8 shot. She will bring home more doves.

For many years, I watched my grandfather dove hunt with a straight cylinder choke in a 16 gauge, and he dropped more doves at long distances than most hunters using modified and full chokes, albeit he did often shoot twice. The advantage he had on the longer shots was in having a bird within the pattern, sparse as it might be, while those with tighter chokes were more likely to "miss" having the bird within their tighter pattern. And of course, a more open choke is a huge advantage on a speeding dove under 30 yards.
