Why does shooting start at noon opening day? Talk on the small game page bout it. I was told it was federal law and it was that way any state u went to.

For many years it is my understanding that the federal framework that the states have to operate under had is starting at noon on opening day with options of the morning shooting starting on Sept. 2. I read the post about NC, so the framework may have changed.
If so, I'm guessing that we choose the noon opener to accomodate the normal opening day traditions with the cookouts and afternoon shoots.

In SD the Pheasant hunting would start at noon the first day. While the reason is never known we think it is so that all the hunters had time to sober up and get rid of the hangover they had from going out the first night away from home.

I've read somewhere that originally, the noon opener was to prevent people from killing a limit in the morning and then going out and killing another "limit" in the afternoon. Now I think it's just stuck for tradition's sake.

Southern Sportsman, I believe that is at least a portion of the reason. For example, in some states you can only hunt turkey until noon.
