I try to post this every yr. with all my obligations i am a little late this go around. My passion for squirrel huntingbhas always been strong. From my first 2 squirrels, a pair of fox squirrels, from the same crooked hickory in an island woodlot- i was hooked. However it was an article I read in the early 1990's in my high school library, that truly fueled my addiction. It appeared in the TN Sportsman (i believe) and it was entitled TN'S Toughest Limit. in the article, the author stated that a one hunt limit of 10 squirrels was not only a challenge but it was toughest feat in all of volunteer state hunting. to do it with a rimfire, bordered on impossible. The desire to prove the authors notion false, fueled me to be a better hunter and rig myself with better equipment. I came close many times before reaching my goal on mid september morning, my freshman yr of college. since this time, my love of squirrel hunting has increased each yr. 20+ LIMITS later, i still feel like that kid with an ol marlin 39 carbine. And you can bet that i will be under a hickory tree somewhere. I hope u will too

I love squirrel season. My squirrel cooking has gotten to be so popular and in demand with my friends that I have to get out there and get quite a few just to keep up. My plan for this year is to have a brine and marinade pre-mixed and in the cooler. I will come out of the woods in the morning, drop the squirrels in the brine and then, before the afternoon hunt, put them in the marinade. Later that evening, we will have a Squirrel opener celebration.
I have to go to the Plateau for a work related matter over labor day weekend -will get some dove hunting in, though I will have to miss the opener. Anyway, I am planning on doing a little squirrel hunting road trip from Memphis to the Plateau and back. I am going to stop at Hatchie refuge on the way out of town, hit up the Nashville area that evening. Catoosa the next day and then stops in Nashville and maybe Natchez Trace on the way back (may fit some early duck season in there, too).
Anyone want to hook up along the way? I am probably rolling out on Aug 29th, be back on ~Sept 5th.

I am looking foward to it. I don't how many limits I have killed with a .22 but it is one of the most enjoyable things for me.

Same feelings here. I am 52 now, and started when I was 12.I couldnt sleep the nite before opening day then and still wake up now. Ive never missed an opening day. I like hunting squirrels with a rifle as much as anything I do. Hope Im there Sat. morning, cant wait. Good luck to all.

I know what you mean Tickweed. I've been after bushytails for more years than I can believe. I never get tired of it. Opening day is like a holiday for me.
