I got drawn there many years ago for an archery hunt the weekend before the statewide season opened. It was a nightmare! They kept the gate closed until some specified time. There were probably a hundred trucks and ATVs lined up waiting. When they opened the gate, it was like a nascar start. Very few deer were killed.

That was a long time ago, things may have changed.

Yeah pretty much sums it up for me as well, of course back then it was a non quota hunt so everyone and their dog was there. Nascar race is right, only dirt track, I couldn't see for all the dust and I dared not slow down for fear of getting rear ended. When I did get to my pre scouted spot [which I "thought" was isolated] I had people all over me all day long.
Never again!!!

I grew up in that area and used to hunt Prentiss Cooper WMA all the time before I moved away. My favorite spot was to go all the way to the top of the mountain, turn left, cross the creek and go until you get to the third road on the right. After you turn (I use park and walk)about a half mile on the left is where I hunted. Lots of success back then.

Ive hunted there a good bit but I rarely go now cause its hard hunting and there is a good bit of folks up there its not a goldmine by no means but if you dont have anything to do that day I guess its better than being stuck in the house just be sure to have some kind of bug spray cause youll get ate up by ticks

No, nothing has changed. It's still a Nascar start every morning. You can see an okay number of deer up there in the summer, but once the army of ATVs rolls in, the deer hole up. During gun season, some are killed on escape routes, and some looking for hot does, but that doesn't work so well during bow season. I have hunted the archery hunts many times but have not killed one with my bow at Prentice Cooper.

And watch for the rattlers and copperheads. I have found them in the thick stuff where the deer hole up, and they also like to sun themselves in September. In fact, I get up there to hike, hunt turkeys, squirrel, and deer in gun season, but bow season is the main time I have run into nasty snakes up there. They are neat to see, but watch where you step, or where you grab hold when using your hands to climb the steep sections.

Youre not kidding hill country Hunter its tough during bow once people get out with their atvs and trucks good luck on seeing anything. In my opinion its not worth the gas it would take to get here from Knoxville I would just stay at the house and practice some and double check my gear for state wide opener

We got drawn last year and this year for it. Last year we got up at like 3:00am and headed out until we got to the gate which doesnt open until 5:00am. My 2 buddies killed the only deer on the first morning out of the same spot. Not very many deer killed at all but it's fun to get to hunt before everybody else. We should be up there at the campground area. See you there!
