I've been noticing a lot of dark coloration or "splotches" on many of the does I've been getting pictures of in the past few weeks. It is mostly on their heads and necks, and doesn't really look like any kind of growth or sores, but just a dark skin pigmentation showing through. I'm guessing that it is related to some of the hormonal changes that have occurred with the late stages of pregnancy and dropping fawns, since skin pigmentation in other animals (including humans) is often affected during and after pregnancy. I haven't really been seeing it on the bucks I've been getting pictures of.

Any body else seeing similar things, or does anyone have any other explanation? I guess it could be something as simple as the hair falling out (do deer get mange??? )

just a guess but I would say it has to do with them scratching at insects and causing hair loss. I usually see it around the head and neck on both bucks and does, which would most likely be caused by them scratching with rear feet.

That does make sense, S'n'S, but I very seldom have seen those patches on bucks over these last few weeks. It may just be one of those mysteries........

I often wonder how bad our deer suffer in the summertime here with biting flies, etc.....just got back from new york and it is much milder up ther weather wise and the does coats on the Army base at fort drum were just fantatically beautiful and without blemish. I agree with woodchuck......prob scratching and so forth.
