When i was about that age, (40 + years ago) my dad bought me a old 410 to cut my teeth. I remember thinking it kicked like a mule. Hey still got it and my daughter shoots it now. I like the 410.

Squirrel 410
dove 28
the 410 shoots a string of shot.. not really what you want dove hunting.. a semi auto 28 will not have very much felt recoil

.410. The shells are somewhat easier to find than the 28. I would see if he can shoot a 20 myself. I was shooting them at the age of 6 and stepped up to the 12 at 8.

Got my son, when he was 7, a Mossberg youth pump 410. Not much recoil to it at all.

I agree with others, though. 410 is good for squirrels or blasting cans and stuff. Doves are tough for adults to hit with a 20g.

I bought my son a Mossberg pump .410 as well. He killed his first two deer as a 6 year old shooting 2 1/2" slugs (inside 20 yards). He had to use a rest, but it worked. He's killed a handfull of ducks with that gun also. I did cut the stock and re-mount the butt pad to fit his short reach.

He's moved up to a .243 to deer hunt with, but still hunts everything else with the .410. Good luck.
