I am harder on my wading rods than my boat rods, so I settle for slightly less expensive rigs for creek fishing. My current rig is a 6'8" medium light Shimano Crucial with a Cabelas Prodigy 2000 size reel. Ugly sticks usually have a very whippy action and lousy sensitivity. If you are throwing small cranks or spinners, an Ugly stick is just fine. If you are fishing soft plastics or jigs, the extra backbone and sensitivity of a quality graphite rod will help out.

What he said^! Folks that think a Ugly Stik is sensitive would not know what to think if they used a higher end Shimano, GLoomis, or St Croix. When I was younger, I thought that a fishing pole was a fishing pole and that people were crazy for spending $100-$200+ for a rod. I no longer think they're crazy. There is a BIG difference....or maybe I'm just crazy now.

Agreed, Ugly stik is basically junk imo!

Basically junk? For the money, it is a great rod... it may not be the most sensitive but you can bend it in half and it won't break, and if it does it won't break the bank. I fish soft plastics with an ugly stik all the time and don't have an issue. Maybe I don't know what it's like to fish with a high end graphite rod, but I definitely have caught a ton of fish on my ugly stiks.

My ugly sticks have laid the smack down on every fish out there. Pound for pound the best rods on the market.

Unless you are tournament fishing.

Ugly stick is the answer for all your needs!

I own 2 Ugly Sticks. One is a 4.5 foot ultra light with a Shakespeare under spin that my 7 year old daughter uses for pond fishing. It's perfect for her. The other is a 7' catfish series that sees limited use since I'm not a catter. The rest of my 20+ rigs are all graphite rods, and most of them good quality. Life's too short to fish with insensitive, heavy buggy whips. If an Ugly Stick works for you, that's great, but if you haven't fished a nicer rod, you are missing the boat.
