A few months back I thought why in the world do I have 6 .50s with a 1-48" twist when about all I shoot is my .54 Renegade and the same gun with a .40 caliber GM barrel. So I sold off a T/C Hawken, New Englander, Tree Hawk, and a Cabela's Hawken carbine. Bought a barely used Renegade .54 with a tang mounted sight and a Cabela's Hawken .54 flintlock, big booming fun with both.
Then I came across a barely used .50 Renegade for $80 and well you just can't turn down a good deal like that now can you... Last night I bought a kinda roughly treated .50 Renegade for $75 it'll probably wind up as a project gun or used for spare parts. Stock has some scratches and I spent an hour cleaning rust and dried up bore butter out of the barrel. Dreary today or I'd have taken it out and shot it to see how it does.
Here I am with 11 muzzleloaders again, hope the wife doesn't start counting...

Needed to mow the yard, but decided to go shoot for a few minutes and see how it would do. When I was cleaning it the other day I started out with damp patches and they kept sticking, so I wound up using sopping wet patches to keep them from slipping off the jag. After an hour I finally got all the bore butter out of the grooves, it was pitted pretty bad.
With that rough of a bore I wasn't really expecting much in the accuracy dep't. I shot at 20 yards just to see how the sights were adjusted. The first shot was Goex 3F, a .495 ball with a pillow ticking patch, hit about 3 inches left of my aiming point. First six inches or so of the muzzle were hard to get the ball moving down but after that it eased up. I had picked up some ancient Pyrodex and other shooting supplies in a deal recently and thought I'd see if it was still usable, next two shots were touching and the third about half an inch away. It wound up better than I expected but I'll have to bushhog the place I shoot at to try longer distances.

Finally mowed my shooting range and had no luck at all shooting this thing today. After shooting quite well at 20 yards, I tried it at 60 and it was all over the place. I shot for about 3 hours with different combinations of powder charges, balls, and patch material, nothing worked. It was more of a pattern than a group but at least it was on the paper. I shot it a couple of times at 100 yards off cross sticks and missed the target completely.
Don't have much use for a gun that's only accurate at 20-30 yards. I'll most likely wind up having someone rebore it to .52.

Good luck getting hold of Bobby Hoyt! I've been calling for the last 3 months with no answer! I know he's still working, he just will not answer his ph one! Have you thought about lopping off the list 6"?

Keep your eyes open on ebay or one of the gun auction sites for a barrel if you're interested. I see them on there all the time. The only the problem is that the good deal you thought you got can sometimes turn into a money pit.
