Saw this report on Maine http://www.realtree.com/hunting/articles-and-how-to/whitetail/antler-nation/maine

I did not know that ME's whitetail population was so low. What caught my eye was this statement: According to a report on the MDIFW website, Maine's whitetails are among the largest of all whitetail subspecies. Mature bucks can attain record live weights of 400 pounds, although 300 pounds is more common.

Is this true?

I remember reading an article years ago about the heaviest whitetails ever recorded. There have been VERY few over 400 lbs.

Looks like the record was 402 lbs field dressed for a Minnesota buck killed in 1926. Estimated live weight was 511 lbs! \:o

I've got that book. Great read. I remember reading about Benoit senior when I was a kid. That's probably been 50 yr ago. (or longer)

Interesting read. Probably a hoax, but sure makes me wonder what is the heaviest buck ever killed.

Is it just me, or does the head of the guy holding the rack look photoshopped? Or does he just look a bit off???

Yes, it's true. I was on a paid hunt in buffalo county Wisconsin with 2 guys from jackman Maine, two 300 pound bucks were killed and I couldn't believe their body size! They both said " you wouldn't know what to think of our 375 pound bucks"!

I grew up and lived in Maine until i was 21, im now 26 and i can tell you the deer population there is very low and i have gone seasons without ever seeing a single deer. When you do happen to get lucky enough to bag one, 250 lbs is pretty common and generally a few a year well over 300
