There has been loads of TALK about this buck and that scoring big numbers and hoping to kill this size buck or that age buck this season. BSK already did a GREAT thread on educating hunters on how to properly age a deer in the field.

So why not some examples (again?) on how to score a buck?

How about we post some mounted bucks with their ACTUAL GROSS score. NOT AN ESTIMATE...ONLY BUCKS THAT HAVE HAD AN ACTUAL TAPE PUT ON THEIR ANTLERS AND A SCORE SHEET.This eliminates field pics as they are kinda hard to get to hold still while you put a tape on them.

I suggest we put in a pic with GROSS score under it.

Go ahead...I can't wait to see some of these bucks. Also, ANY STATE.

BTW, could someone post an actual P/Y or B/C score sheet?

Alright, let's try this. Without the benefit of tape or antlers in hand...
What do you THINK this buck scores

BTW...there is a VERY good clue in this picture. EVERY deer has two.
Also, it is a main frame CLEAN ten point.

Can you blow it up a little bigger?

I'll go 134" but the pic is small. Need a front on view to better determine beams/mass/spread. Deer could be smaller framed than it looks or bigger. hard to tell.

If you want this to be an informational thread, I'd vote to get rid of the guessing game. The score is going to end up on a different page as the photo potentially. I'd prefer to see just a picture(s) and the score.

Here is another view.

Keep in mind this buck dressed out at about 150 pounds. It was a long and big bodies buck.

My point is this...why don't we use this thread to post bucks that we KNOW what they scored so we may educate others as to what it takes to SCORE BIG in antlers.

BTW, it scored 110 inches.

I didn't want to affend you, so I didn't post my thoughts. I thought he would score around 115" due to his good tine length. Him being narrow, looks like 10-12" wide, and not much mass. once again good buck, but didn't want to affend you.

HH,
I take no offense. Why would I be offended with a score number guess? I've killed much bigger, and much smaller.

And you are right, it IS a good example of high grading. But this is what happens a few days before the Illinois GUN opener, with limited time and VERY low light. I actually shot him based on body size and the fact that I thought he was mature. At 3.5 on public land, I doubt he would have survived the week end. And frankly did not care, he was big enough for me.

I am not a proponent of letting bucks walk, UNLESS that is what helps you get the enjoyment you need out of your hunting experience.

I do not care WHAT you or ANYONE else kills, as long as it is LEGAL and makes you happy.

O-k...back to posting antler scores.

Surely someone else has a scored buck to post.

Let's see some more of those 130's, 140's, and 150,s we all keep hearing about.

By the way, can anyone tell me what PERCENTAGE of antler scoring represents about 68% of the gross score?

68%. \:D On a serious note, beam and tine length. Basically, the sum of both main beams length and total tine length (all tines) will equal about 64-68% of the gross score. This has checked out with most of the bucks I have killed/scored. I have killed a few with above average mass that skewed these percentages somewhat.

RIGHT ON Andy, but from you, I expected no less!

Yes, TINE LENGTH!!! If a buck is walking toward you, and LOOKS like it has LONG tines, then it is probably going to score fairly high.

In theory:
it can have TEN pencil thin, 8, 10, and 12 inch points, with average tine length and spread, and it will score pretty well.

On the other hand, it can have really good mass, and spread, and main beam length, with stubby short points, and score low.

TINE LENGTH...TINE LENGTH...TINE LENGTH...

Of course it may still be a 3.5 year old (stir stir)

So about TEN percent is SPREAD Credit and only ABOUT 30 percent is MASS.

Remember when you are sizing up a buck's antlers on the hoof, and you only have a few seconds, a good rule of thumb...65/25/10 or my personal favorite...70 percent tine length!!!

Now how about some of yalls buck scores!!!

As soon as I saw it, no doubt my mind changed. Those side views can be misleading.

Most of the time. Trying to find the picture of a deer we killed.

Longest tine was a hair over 7", typical 10 with a 1 1/8" kicker. He grossed 135" and some change. Heaviest mass deer I've seen around here with 25" beams. He was definately an exception and 5.5yr old was his age.

Velvet pic is all I got right now with me. 17" inside. He was all mass and beams. Very rare with those short tines to hit 135".

Guy who owned it never hunted. Found it. Brought another buck that was near 150" that he found on RR tracks in Alabama. Had two monsters and didn't even hunt.

I have to agree with these post and it makes a good point. I hunt in an area in E. TN that is probably hunted all year long by the locals.... It doesn't stop me from hunting and reaching my GOALS... I have never worried about what the next guy is killing. I hunt because that's what I grew up doing in Florida and my family owns a hunting business. My point is that I have always wondered why some are worried about buck limits or what the next guy is doing.

This is a great statement.... "I do not care WHAT you or ANYONE else kills, as long as it is LEGAL and makes you happy."

The way I feel and sorry if I hijacked this thread a little but you guys were making good sense.

I have never had one of my bucks aged or scored.... They just have to past the eye test and the older I get, the worst my eyes are.... \:\)

OK...I am stealing that line about the eye test.

I agree. Also, after having reached and surpassed every goal I ever had in regards to killing deer numbers, deer age, antler size, weapon type, etc, etc. I just want to hunt and have fun and live through the eyes of the youngsters I am now helping to get into hunting.

After all, everyone needs to enjoy this sport. I hope it NEVER goes away. It has been very good to me and I want as many as is reasonable to simply participate.

Some great racks...keep them coming.

Also some great examples of REAL bucks.

(BTW, I just watched a show called The Chase. This pretty woman and her husband went bow hunting at Timber Ghost Ranch. It was a high Fence Deal.

They were very excited about their 5000 inch racked bucks. They seem very happy. That is good for them. I just didn't get it.

Post the bucks WITH the score BH. Thanks.
But I will be glad to see ANY buck pics at all. If someone wants us to guess, that is fine too.

The point here is to learn.
Still haven't seen too many of all those 130, 140, 150 inchers.

I have all the score sheets for these deer in a file. I'm not positive which sheet goes with which deer, but I do know that the highest scoring buck on this wall hit right at 120".Can you pick him out just by this pic....There is another on thta wall that scored just under 120" and is my best bow kill to date...Can you pick him out?

The next buck was scored by TWRA agents at 148" gross....no doubt, the odd rack added to the score...the next two pics are of him...

The deer on the left was scored by Chaneylake at 133 5/8" gross.

The deer to the right was just under 130" scored by me.

Below are pics of the two deer taken the day of the kill...the first pic is the deer on the left that scored 133 5/8" .

I knew this deer would be tough unless it was in hand. His bases are over 6 1/2" . He is a freak mass wise and he carries it all the way out. He grossed 143". He has 11 pts total, even if he is ugly!!! \:D

GREAT post BH.
Thanks!

This is a GREAT study in what it takes to get to 150!

And some GREAT bucks.

It is really hard to tell buck score without BEING there.

And also hard to judge buck score from a glance.

This is why it is so important to understand just how hard it is for a buck to reach 130 inches of antler.

And yet, people are constantly throwing around big numbers on rack score like they are common. AND THEY ARE NOT.

The bucks you have on your wall are awesome bucks. FOR ANY STATE.

I mean, you know we are talking GROSS right?
I am guessing based on about a 7 inch ear.

Left antler
Main beam 17
G1 7
G2 11
G3 8
H1 5
H2 4
H3 3
Total 58

X2 116

OK...maybe I was wrong.

Again...A GREAT buck, impressive rack, and I guarantee you most will take a shot. And be crazy not to.

Some TRULY impressive bucks guys.

Are ALL of these from PUBLIC land?
Any of these from managed property?

My buck is from my private land, not really managed per say, but we do let smaller bucks walk, for the most part. I did take pretty good 4pt last year tho.

I knew the first too would be guessed over by about ten inches. Good answer on the spike.

The scores are 90-93.5-44

I'll post a few more later on. Score doesn't matter much but it's good to know approximately how big the deer standing in front of you actually is.

But I will be glad to see ANY buck pics at all. If someone wants us to guess, that is fine too.

The point here is to learn.
Still haven't seen too many of all those 130, 140, 150 inchers.

!

Here you go. These are my 5 highest scoring bucks.

This one grossed 138 0/8 net 131 6/8 scored by TWRA bow kill only had a 12 6/8 inside spread!

This one grossed 135 5/8 net 129 6/8 scored by TWRA bow kill

These 2 were both pushing 150 gross but don't have the score sheets as The scorers seemed to get ill towards me when I asked for them because they only published the net scores which I told them I didn't care about I wanted to know gross. Seemed like they were asked that by everybody though so I'm sure they were already annoyed when i asked but all could have been avoided by posting both the net and gross scores at the old TN deer classic show which that was the last I attended.

This 13pt non-typical I killed season before last hasn't been scored but considering trying out the "new deer classic"

Agreed! I know that if I do my part, then I will have opportunities for a good deer or three every year even on public land. I also know what to expect in the areas that I hunt and base what I consider a "shooter" on that.

Some people say that their terms of a shooter has to be 125", 130", etc plus to shoot. I have hunted for 20 years and have killed only two deer 125" plus. However, I have killed a bunch of deer that were 3.5 plus. Most of these had 90 - 100" racks. There are some areas that the 125" plus etc is doable, but in mine, it is not realistic to hold out for. However, I know that and am content. I have also seen these same people that will only shoot a 130" deer turn inside out when they see a 100" plus deer. A lot of people don't know just what it takes for a deer to reach 130". I think that this may be 102's point to start this thread in the first place just to see what it takes for a deer to score such and such. I know that in my area, a 130" plus is a giant and something special to kill.

Just my $.02 worth.

SPOT ON LARRY...you (and several others on Tndeer, obviously "get it")

I wish I could report on the bull hockey being spewed on TV every time some personality is holding a set of 120 inch antlers and reporting it as a 140. I see this so often on TV and video that I now just grin.

If we on Tndeer (especially in these posted pics) had their tape
measure to score our deer, we would all be stacking on "180's".

I would put MOST successful Tndeer hunters, (especially the SE area hunters), against ANY Mid-western deer hunters ANY TIME. I am CERTAIN they would out hunt most of them 2-1.

Wes,

131 3/8's gross by looking at the first pic. But boy, that second pic makes him look much smaller than that, imo!

By looking at the second pic only, I'd say he would be considerably smaller than my "guess"
