It's something I've never seen in my career, and I've been here for more than 17 years," said Mark Flammang, a fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. "I think what we're mainly dealing with here are the extremely low flows and this unparalleled heat."

Iowa DNR officials said the sturgeon found dead in the Des Moines River were worth nearly $10 million, a high value based in part on their highly sought eggs, which are used for caviar. The fish are valued at more than $110 a pound.

I read either on this forum or another forum that TWRA is worried about trout dying in the Caney Fork due to not being able to generate enough out of Center Hill to keep the water cold. In order to keep the fish from just dying for no reason, in this situation they will impliment what's known as "fish kill" which basically means throw out the regulations and keep whatever trout you want.

Anyone ever heard of this happening? This was months ago during the drought. We've gotten lots of rain recently and Center Hill has been generating more so I'm not expecting it to happen. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen this happen.

I dont know about the midwest but I know the sturgeon in the cumberland river are protected because the dams prevent their spawning runs and destroyed the population.

I was in Iowa last weekend. My son took the dog for a walk Sun morning and noticed an odd odor as he approached a city pond. His first thought was, "This smells like the pier in Florida." When he got close enough to see the pond he discovered that it was littered with hundreds of dead fish. He said that he had seen people fishing there but had no idea that there were that many fish in the pond or that there were so many big ones. I always hate to see things like that, but it's nature's way.
