Do we have any inventors on TNdeer? Specifically does anyone own any patents, or attempted to patent an invention? I have researched it a little and the process seems really expensive and complicated. I made (I'm not sure I would call it "invented") an item that I think would sell really well. I made it by combining existing products in a unique way, and have has an engineer friend of mine look at it and even use it. He seemed impressed and helped me tweak it slightly to make it even better.
I know I am being vague, but I just wonder if anyone has any real-world insight into inventing/getting something patented. ...also is it OK for me to use existing products to make something, or do I need to build it from scratch? I've looked at companies like Inventhelp.com but they are a in the business of making money, I am looking for real world experience/advise.

I believe if you use existing products you are not called and inventor but an innovator. and I do believe it is legal. I looked into inventing a couple things. a friend of mine works in patent research checking patents against somethings a large college up north creates. She helped a little but I never went as far as patenting anything.

File a provisional patent. You can file your own for Under $200 and it gives you a filing date and a "patent pending" status. Once you file, you have year to test its marketability before filing a non-provisional patent ($$$). Stay away from patent companies, they will rob you blind.
You can perform a Google patent search to give you a good idea of whether your invention is out there.

Heard about a "Poor mans copyright" one time. You take all of the needed documentation, and mail it to yourself. Leave the package sealed and if you ever need it, it has a post marked date. Not sure how well that would stand up legally, but you might look into it.

I'm in the process of filing 3 patents. They will be assigned to my company but list myself as inventor. Fortunately, we have a legal team and patent office in D.C. that handles the dirty work of doing preliminary infringement searches and drafting the claims. The wording of the claims is perhaps the most critical part of a patent. I'll see if I can find some good resources for the application process.

+1 what infoman jr. said. I have a couple from my time at Timken. We had a patent lawyer (several) that did all the legwork for us. All we had to do was supply the application and the required documentation. I do know the sticky bit is the prior art search. That where they see if your widget is already a widget or close enough to a widget to deny you...

Thanks for all the advice. I have talked to a couple of patent lawyers and the one thing I have learned is that it is a very expensive process with no guarantees. I'll sit on it a while and maybe do something with it when I have a little more free money.

I have one patent, but it is through the company. The local (knoxville) patent attorneys did the "dirty" work. Yes there are no guarantees, as a search has to made to be sure that there is no prior "art" and the such. If there are similar ideas then you may need to prove that yours different enough to justified a new patent to the patent office.
Good luck
