Anybody ever bowhunted for them on public grounds? I want to go next year. Thinking I might go during rifle season just in case the bow doesn't work out.

Good luck, I hunted for Mule Deer south of Newcastle in 2010 and the Pronghorn were thick as fleas. I got within 50 yds of several nice bucks slipping up Beaver creek drainage. Of course this was on a private ranch and you would be lucky to get within 200 yards of one on public land once the guns start going off. You could try and get in touch with( PM me for their name), They own 30 thousand acres in Antelope Unit 6 that is where I deer hunted. Trespass fee was 400 bucks.

We hunted private couple yrs ago in Unit A. It was my first experience doing spot and stalk. We had a blast.

Got within 50 yards of a nice buck before a fence messed us up and crawled no telling how many miles thru drainages trying to get to others.

I dont think it would be much of a challenge with a rifle tho. We woulda been tagged out in an hour.

I just bought a left over 23 goat tag. The area is classified as hard access for DIY public land hunters, but I have a GPS download of WY that shows every piece of public ground, so I plan to get to know area 23 pretty well! I will be spending a week or so there. I am not looking for a "trophy" in the 80" terms, but a DIY hunt is successful no matter what. I think when you come to terms with that you will have a great time. This will be a rifle hunt, I have taken 2 goats so far in WY, one at 280 yds and the other at 383 yds, so Archery is not yet in my plans. But if it were I would for sure go early season, set up on water and get a decoy.

No matter what you decide to do...research research research! Too many horror stories of folks headed out west to hunt the "public" ground to only find out it is not legally accessible. If a area says its hard to access, then it is, but you can still make a hunt out of it. Dont plan a 3 day hunt and expect the game to fall in your lap, it can happen but in all honesty its not likely and can leave a bad taste in your mouth for the west. Example...area 23 is low on public land access, but there is a BLM chunk that is 25-30 square miles that is accessible. So you be the judge, yes game has to be in the area but it will take me more than a week to explore 16,000+ acres on foot! You also have the trespass fee option...If I were limited on time or had never been to WY this is what I would do, they range from $100 to ???? have until Sept 30 to purchase a preference point, its $30 I think. Build your points, then stay on top of the biologist reports for the herds. You can hunt every year and still build points, I bought a left over tag and a point this year. Its gonna be work but that is what I like about hunting. If it were easy everyone would do it.
