Last day of carp tournament... thoughts

let me tell you it is not easy getting a carp to bite a fly, and with me being new to fly fishing it was tough to get a good cast on the first try and get the fly where I wanted it.

But I did come in with 4 fish, 3 commons and one buffalo. The buffalo and 3rd carp were both caught right under my nose, where I didn't have to cast. And it looks like I will get 2nd place for Ugliest fish. $\:D$ and yes it was a very ugly one.

This morning I was fishing for the last time and I hooked a carp in real shallow and the tippet broke instantly. Not the first time it's happened (also happened on 2 drum) and I'm wondering if I should change my tippet more often or use another brand.

Still had fun fishing for carp with a fly rod, and will be going to the banquet at Fly South tomorrow. I will say though that competitive fishing is not my preferred type of fishing... I am competitive, and will fish it till the very end (as I have), but it does tire me out a bit and I prefer to relax and enjoy fishing without worrying about getting another fish on the board.

I will still occasionally fly fish for carp to fine tune the skill and figure out how to catch them more consistently. But I also can't wait to bring a lawn chair to the river bank one evening, build a camp fire, throw some corn and a few lines into the water and wait for the reels to start screaming.

Oh and by the way, the 1st place biggest fish is a 25 lb Silver carp. $\:o$

were you using a corn fly? maybe next time dip it in some can of corn juice $\:D$
that would be cheating tho

nope I was mostly using nymph flies. Corn fly likely wouldn't work unless the area was chummed, which is against the rules. You have to get your fly in the path of a feeding carp and twitch it slowly by his nose and hope the fish takes it. Improperly placing the fly can easily spook em. I did use a homemade grass fly made of foam and had a big 15+ lb grass carp take it off the surface. But the hook came free from the loop knot, who knows how, and the knot was not even broken.

$\:D$ .......grass fly ? thats interesting, you think tieing a blade of grass to a sraight long hook be better? im just saying, cuz i never knew they ate the same food as trout. i always caught them on sesame seed dough balls, them carps cant resist the smell of sesame seed oil

corn is my favorite bait when not fly fishing. Grass carp love bread but in the wild they eat algae, aquatic plants, leaves, grass, nymphs etc. When I almost caught that one on the foam grass fly, all the grass carp were kind of feeding around on the surface, eating small leaves that had fallen from the trees.

Catman - you da man for doing so well in the tournament. Most don't put a single fish on the board, and you got four. That's really impressive, especially since you just started fly fishing.

thanks Gil. Hit me up if/when you want to check out my creek spot. It's nothing special really but there are lots of commons and usually a few feeding up in the shallows by the shoreline. You would probably catch em a lot better than I did.

this wouldn't be allowed in the tournament but I dip my Doe Tail fly in some estrous scent and it works great on those mature bucks. Careful or they will run between trees and break you off... use a sturdy tippet.
