The Franklin TN dam on the Harpeth off 431 is being removed now.... stopped by yesterday with a friend to look, but they wouldn't let us due to the construction zone. This is where trout are stocked in the winter. Wonder how the river bed will look when they are done.

I wonder why this isn't all over the news. Or maybe I just missed it. This is a huuuuge deal!

I went there today on the other side of the river and got pics. They are still on the camera but will post a few soon.

The City of Franklin has a "dam cam" on the project and you can watch it on their website. It was on channel 4 news tonight.

I may be wrong but I think I read that the river should be a lot healthier once the dam is gone. Is the removal bad or good?

yep they are saying it will benefit water quality and fish. A guy operating one of the backhoes told me they are gonna put in some rock structures in the river and tree stumps etc to make it more wildlife friendly. I am wondering how the winter trout will be affected - how many will go upstream? Who knows... They aren't my favorite fish to catch anyway.

The winter trout don't live long enough to be affected, water's not clear enough. And that's not the city's camera, it's the Harpeth River Watershed Association's camera. Removal is good, allows free flow of the river.

I know the trout don't live long but I was thinking in terms of how they will disperse after stocking. You see the way to fish for them for the first day or two after stocking is to use corn or trout magnets and find the school of them right below the dam and catch one after the other. \:D some sport fishing aint it?

and then they start to disperse downstream. I am wondering how many will travel upstream this time. Also, I wonder if any spring-fed tributaries hold a few over the summer. I've heard of it from a friend who fishes the harpeth all the time. If the spring water is cold enough year-round I guess it's possible.

\:D never seen or heard of a rockfish in the harpeth, at least not up in franklin. There are some good smallmouth though. I would love to see a bass eat a stocker trout in the harpeth... lots of bass but the big ones aren't often seen.

The water's not that clear though... silt is the biggest single pollutant in the Harpeth.
