We were up messing around on Melton Hill Sunday evening. We decided to ride up beaver creek to get out of the traffic for a bit. When we got back in there I started hearing the low pitched grunting or moaning sound. Almost like a muffled bull frog. We looked around and moved around trying locate the sound, but it was tricky to kinda get a bead on where the sound was coming from. I finally figured that it was coming from under the boat. It got loud at times. Must have been a bunch of them. If that's what it was.

Any of yall ever experience this or know what I'm talking about?

I suspect the sound was coming from your beer cooler.

I have heard feeding buffalo make a quiet, low-pitched grunting noise when they are feeding.

I've heard of drum making an audible sound during the spawn time but I haven't heard it myself.

Lol you guys are halarious. But it'd be tough to hear anything coming from the beer cooler seeing as how it was at the house. See,fortunately, I'm not the type to risk the type of punishment that comes with getting drunk on the lake and then dragging my boat back home. But thanks for your contribution to my thread.

It really does sound crazy, but hey, that's why I asked folks on here what the heck it could have been.

It was the DRUM....
I have night fished Melton Hill for years, and almost without exception we have heard that noise. I used to hear it on Norris, and others. My grandfather taught me what that sound was when I was a kid. Apparently, they rub some bones in their head together in an attempt to find a mate. At least that's my understanding. Hence the name "Drum."

Based on my research what you're hearing is commonly referred to as the mating call of the Big Foot aka Sasquatch or to some the Yetti. I sure hope you fellas don't go back up there. Whatever you do, if nature calls, don't go squatting in the woods - I'd hate to read about you in the Knoxville News Sentinel.

I could be completely wrong but I thought it was their swim bladder that makes the sound. I have had them croak plenty of times when caught, and it seems to come from the middle of the fish not the head.

Could be. Just going off of what I have been told.
