trolling up to Old Hickory dam this afternoon, I watched some people launch a bass boat and then pass me up the river and take "my" spot at the corner of the generator. When I got there I saw them catch a couple of stripers. So after fooling around with the fly rod for skipjack, I took to the current and got up by the spillways and threw a Fluke with a big sinker a few times. I got into a sort of eddy where I could maintain my position on speed 3 of 5 on the trolling motor. Switching between steering and reeling and casting, I got a solid hit right under the spill and the fish flew out of the water as I set the hook. Nothing big - 5 and a half pounds - but was a thrill and I may have yet another fish to add to my top list... can't imagine a 30 or 40 pounder. I have caught a couple small striper in saltwater, but this is my first freshwater.

Oh and they have not been generating for weeks. They were doing some work on it today with some kind of scaffolding on the powerhouse. Who knows.... anyway I am glad the rockfish were there and biting.

Also during the evening there were pods of skipjack that would start jumping out of the water by the dozens, just for a minute or two at a time. I don't know if that's just something they do or if there were big fish under them. When they were jumping crazy like that they would not take the wooly bugger that I had already caught 2 with. Thoughts?

Try taking the sinker off and putting a 1/8-ounce splitshot about 18" above the hook. You don't need to get down deep for rockperch, just get their attention. Without the heavy weight, the fluke has far more action and that gets their attention. They will also hit a white streamer fly.

Will have to try it. I'm sure the fluke had enough action though because it was on a 3 ft leader below the sinker. Only reason I used a 2 oz bank sinker with a leader is because I didn't want to retie - just wanted to get a line in the water before the other guys caught another fish!

Those skips were getting chased by stripes. See a school jumpin like that toss your bate passed them and bring it through. Biggest stripe to date is 23 lbs doing just that.

I thought so when I saw it, and started throwing my fluke through the jumping schools. Do you fish the lure deeper or near the surface with the school? I did a couple handfuls of casts and no takers. Tried to vary depth as well.
