Way late for this, could have cleaned up during the cicada madness here about 3 weeks ago. When I get some time I will post pics of my trophy coy on a fly.

Ha I may try but I doubt I will wear the jacket! I'd like to get myself one carp and make it a good one. Got my eye on a few fishin holes that are more secret than Area 51 and Gil knows where they are... not that they are super good, they are just the best places I know of to start.
Setterman - was there another cicada hatch in your area this year? I'd love to see the koi pic. Not many places I know of that I can catch koi. But there is one that is legal in this carp fly tournament. They don't get big though.

We had cicadas in NE TN around Kingsport. The Koi came from Boone Lake.

I will never understand why some fly fisherman feel the need to eliminate other anglers because of method-- (not trying to piss anyone off) but I do not think throwing a fly is the best method foe catching the biggest fish- but what the heck do I know--

Of course it's not the best method, but that's not the point. It's the same thing as using a bow when you could use a rifle. But people do it for the challenge. Nothing wrong with that.
Fly rods are illegal in BASS sanctioned tournaments. I will never understand why some bass fishermen feel the need to eliminate other anglers because of method.

What Gil said... it's the challenge... I do know the fly fisherman attitude you are talking about but Gil isn't one of them. He is definitely one of those who got addicted to fly fishing and now that's the only type of fishing he does.... I fear for my fate and will cling to my spinning reels, it's risky for me to venture into this, but I can't wait to try and fool maybe one carp with a fly.
Sounds like it is time to come up with a fly that looks like a doughball. I think there is one called a golden nugget that is supposed to look like a piece of corn- go figure I have tied some flies that imitate leaves, blades of grass, bread and algae, all for grass carp. Bought some crawfish/nymph flies for common carp, buffalo, etc. I plan to use all but the bread imitation in the tourney. Can't use bread or food imitations in ponds where carp have been fed, it's an unfair advantage.
A few days ago I was at [secret location] standing 10 ft away from a grass carp and had him an inch away from eating a crappy first attempt at a leaf imitation. Hope my new ones have a bit more appeal.
