Last year, our own Brian Dunigan whopped my arse and took first place. This year, Catman's got his eye on some behemoth grass carp and could wear the coveted carp jacket. Are you man enough to take the challenge? \:D

Way late for this, could have cleaned up during the cicada madness here about 3 weeks ago. When I get some time I will post pics of my trophy coy on a fly.

Ha I may try but I doubt I will wear the jacket! I'd like to get myself one carp and make it a good one. Got my eye on a few fishin holes that are more secret than Area 51 and Gil knows where they are... not that they are super good, they are just the best places I know of to start.

Setterman - was there another cicada hatch in your area this year? I'd love to see the koi pic. Not many places I know of that I can catch koi. But there is one that is legal in this carp fly tournament. They don't get big though.

We had cicadas in NE TN around Kingsport. The Koi came from Boone Lake.

I will never understand why some fly fisherman feel the need to eliminate other anglers because of method--
(not trying to piss anyone off) but I do not think throwing a fly is the best method foe catching the biggest fish- but what the heck do I know--

Of course it's not the best method, but that's not the point. It's the same thing as using a bow when you could use a rifle. But people do it for the challenge. Nothing wrong with that.

Fly rods are illegal in BASS sanctioned tournaments. I will never understand why some bass fishermen feel the need to eliminate other anglers because of method. ;\)

What Gil said... it's the challenge... I do know the fly fisherman attitude you are talking about but Gil isn't one of them. He is definitely one of those who got addicted to fly fishing and now that's the only type of fishing he does.... I fear for my fate and will cling to my spinning reels, it's risky for me to venture into this, but I can't wait to try and fool maybe one carp with a fly.

I have tied some flies that imitate leaves, blades of grass, bread and algae, all for grass carp. Bought some crawfish/nymph flies for common carp, buffalo, etc. I plan to use all but the bread imitation in the tourney. Can't use bread or food imitations in ponds where carp have been fed, it's an unfair advantage.

A few days ago I was at [secret location] standing 10 ft away from a grass carp and had him an inch away from eating a crappy first attempt at a leaf imitation. Hope my new ones have a bit more appeal.

Oh no! Not the fly fishing snobbery thing again.... Look, fly fishing is just another "arrow in the quiver" Happens to be the one I prefer, but not the only one I use or guide for.

I assume it's catching a fish bigger than the biggest fish caught by a shop employee...in this case Monroe.

Close. "Beat the shop" is based on total weight caught by the shop employees rather than the biggest fish caught by the shop, I believe.

Ah, the old jealousy strikes again... some people just don't get it no matter how many times you drill it into their heads.

Like Gil said, it's the same concept as bow hunting - it's not about "the best method for catching the biggest fish," it's about increasing the challenge. For comparison - there aren't many times when hunting a turkey with a bow is "more effective" than hunting one with a shotgun, but it's challenging and rewarding when you do it and succeed.

Anyway biglures, it's a free country. If you want to hold a conventional tackle carp tournament, you are free to do so whenever you want!

The difference is, I can sign up for your conventional tackle carp tournament and I will beat you. But you can't join the fly fishing tournament and beat me.

Nothing to do with jealousy BD- what is there for me to be jealous about?

I am happy you are the self proclaimed all tackle carp champion but I can sight fish and toss a dough ball with the best of em-

If you ever care to hold an all tackle tournament of your own for longest fish or heaviest fish count me in. Trout, rockfish or muskie, doesn't matter- you will lose.

So back to the tournament. How was the weekend, Brian. Were the bigguns in your new hole? I think I'm going to go on Tuesday if the water clears up by then. It's only supposed to be 98 freaking degrees.

ha I was 3 ft from an ol grassie, nothing huge, but it was 9pm with barely any light left in the sky and something spooked him right in front of my face as I lay flat on the ground with my fly rod.... oh well there's next time. Not half as bad as having a 15-20 pounder take your fly and then having the hook come off somehow.

Yall have fun in the heat, I am deciding what to do with Tuesday as I have the whole day off.

Is that any way to talk on a public forum???

Looks like you and catman are both going to be fishing tomorrow while I'm stuck at work. I guess I'll be nervously checking the board Wednesday morning...

Good luck, but not TOO much luck.

I will be all over the map tomorrow, not staying in one spot too long, unless I find a spot where the fish are numerous and cooperating.

mostly crawfish and nymph imitations. make sure it sinks good because you want to present it on the bottom, where the fish is feeding.

Well, the carp tournament is over, and below are the results. My good buddy and tournament newcomer Walt Kloeppel caught this beeeeg ole silver carp to take home first prize. A couple of my fish got second and third.

Tndeer's own Brian Dunigan obliterated everyone in total pounds with 70 fish and 457 pounds, and I got third in that category. In his first couple of months of flyfishing and first time in the tournament, tndeer's catman got on the board with four fish - a highly impressive feat for a newbie.

Here's a pic. of Walt's big fish and a couple of Dunigan handing over the Carp Masters jacket to Walt. Tournament tradition is that last year's winner (Dunigan) must put the honorable ugly jacket on this year's winner. The banquet at host Fly South Fly Shop was awesome, and a good time was had by all. Let the trash talking begin for next year's event.

it was great to participate this year and I look forward to next year. Congrats to all the winners. that silver carp was a cool catch despite silver carp being such a nuisance fish. I'd love to get my fly in front of one that was feeding like that. I will be honing my carp fly fishing skills between now and next year's tourney....

Oh yeah - forgot to give credit where credit is due. Catman's ugly fish captured second place, and more than a few felt he could have won the king of the big uglies. \:\)

I'd say the carp aren't so ugly to other carp.

I know I';d like it, but I was only in the state of Tennessee 8 nights the entire month of July. I can't even go to the banquet (week night) to have the fun of meetng everybody.

Next year I might enter and be the first Carp Master to be crowned in exile.
