Just got these pics of the Buckeye camera I'm testing. How wide is that buck? Love the split browtines. In fact, I think he has three browtines on his left side, plus a small kicker down towards his left base.

BSK, have you tried converting the IR pics to black and white. Some of the IR pics really lighten up and give you more detail if you do that. That's a great buck.

What are the odds he is related? Send him back would ya? I had a close encounter that I need to finish what was started. I guess our area doesn't produce many "10's" but I guess there is nothing wrong with the wide racks either.

Richmanbarbeque,

Definitely either the same genetic line or possibly even the same buck. Very similar shape.

And the second buck in your pic (the one at the lick) is a very VERY common shape for the area. I call it the "crabclaw" shape. Several of the oldest bucks we've photographed or killed have that shape.

I don't know why we see so few basic 10-pointers in the area. They are definitely a rare thing, even among the oldest bucks. Although I did get a picture of what is already a 9-point buck (looks like a 3 1/2 year-old) and he still has plenty of time to grow that 10th point.

When I seen the pic my stomach went into knots. I'm just glad he is in the area. It looks a lot like the same buck. I will tell you the story when I see you. ;\)

Richmanbarbeque,

Look at the strange spots on the buck's neck in your picture and then look at the similar spots on the buck's neck in my picture. That very well may be the same buck.

BSK,

I saw that IR picture in the QDM forum, and I was thinking that surely you did not give the Cuddeback No Flash another go. Noticed that there was no branding on the image so I figured it was from something else.

Awesome buck! Exciting. It would be awfully tempting to check that camera's card about every day except that you say it is a Buckeye. I assume that the base station is no where near your home (at least I think that is how that one works) which would be a good thing. I would waste too many hours in the middle of the night glued to the PC waiting for an image to pop up

WRF,

The Buckeye I'm using is the Aries model, which is a 3 MP standalone unit (no radio transmission). I'm very impressed. Without question the best commercial camera I've used. Trigger speed is basically instantaneous. In fact, I got a daylight picture of myself driving by VERY FAST on my ATV and the camera actually caught me dead center over the salt rock (which is what I have the camera focused on). I mean LIGHTNING FAST trigger.

hunter drew,

Their website lists the Aries at $1,050 and that comes with everything, including a really cool swivel mounting bracket, straps, long-life battery and battery charger. I think the battery will last several months.

If your interested, I would look around at resellers, as they may be able to beat the factory list price (at least several have told me they can).

Fully mature, which means 4 1/2+. I would need to see him filled out for the rut to get a better estimate than that.

Actually, the two pics are of the same buck. He is working a long-standing salt lick (has been in that location for 12 years). Here's the full first pic so you can see the huge hole the deer have dug to get at the salt. The "lump" at the top of the lick is the actual Trophy Rock.

hunter drew,

488 acres to be exact. Our program has been fairly successful. We now kill at least one mature buck and several 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 year-old bucks per year off of it.

In fact, we average 8-10 does and 4 older bucks per year, but we could kill more--a couple hunters usually only shoot 3 1/2s, while others will kill 2 1/2s.

Any new pics? I may go check my camera this weekend, maybe we have his cousin at cathole.

I don't put out my cameras "full time" until August 1. If a buck gets camera shy, I want at least the first picture of him when his antlers have almost finished growing (which they will be by Aug. 1).

I only got the pictures of him I did because I was testing a new camera (Buckeye Aries).

I also have a Stealth I-450 to test in the next few days.
