Great interview here with Steven Rinella discussing the contemporary state of hunting, difficulties facing new hunters and declining hunter numbers.

He makes an interesting point, which I have never thought about much, that most people that get into hunting later in life, or "unlikely hunters", as they are called, tend to be highly interested in how to do hunting "right", ethical and legally, where poachers, tend to be born into hunting (not that all hunters born into hunting are poachers). In other words, some guy in his mid 30s becomes interested in hunting and learning to hunt, more than likely isn't going to go buy a gun, spotlight a deer on someone else's land and shot it. Poaching tends to be taught in family cultures.

Another interesting point is that, often, someone expresses interest in hunting, and the experienced hunter says "Great!" and takes this person to their exclusive lease, calls in a turkey for them, lets them pull the trigger and that's it. The question is, what have you really done for that person? You haven't given them a place to hunt, you haven't shared information on how to find a place to hunt, all you have done is lead them to thinking that the only way you can successfully hunt is have a prime piece of land, where, having access to hunting land will invariably be their greatest challenge.

Cool dude. Thanks for the rinella link. I dont wach his show as I am going on 6 years without tv. But I read american buffalo and loved it. Cant wait for his new book out in september. Im one of those that got into hunting in my early 30's. Mostly self taught etc. I think the point made about " unlikely " hunters is certainly spot on in my case....i certainly want to do all this "right".
Anyway always enjoy your posts on here poser. Ive learned alot here on tn deer through out the years. Thats why it pains me to say that I think im done with the site. Just so much headbutting/mudslinging etc.
