Last year I hunted the spring season and it wasn't so bad. I think it was because of the storms stripping a lot of the foliage away. This year though it is like hunting in a jungle! I've got bug bites, poison ivy, my allergies were going nutso, and went through my canteen of water WAY too fast late yesterday. The pup though was the cause of part of the canteen, I'm going to have to bring him his own or leave him at home.

I guess I'm going to have to go to morning hunting only because of the heat. One of the things I noticed last year in the early fall season, is that they were hanging a lot near the lake and water. Pretty much all of the ones I shot were along creeks and Fort Loudon lake. I may have to get the bass boat out!

Well anyway the woods behind my house is loaded with them! Probably no reason to really go anywhere. In the spring season last year I shot 36 (not all at one time of course)in the small woodlot behind my house, but paid for it in the fall when there were hardly any. The weather and mast crop has a LOT to do with the population. Last year both of them were horrible here.

For some reason I cant get excited about actually going in to the woods hunting spring squirrel for the reasons you mentioned, But I enjoy shooting them if they are passing through the garden or yard, because that is 1 less that will be in our pecan trees in the fall.

I just saw one about an hour ago running through the yard. Morning and evening like most animals.

During the Spring season, I pretty much only go in the mornings, as the afternoons can be brutally hot.
