The neighbor has been asking for help in getting rid of a family of ground hogs destroying his garden. We have seen atleast 3 young hogs and 2 adults. One of the groundhogs actually burrowed into his house and was living in his basement/den. That one was caught by live trap.

But the older hogs have been quite elusive. Today while on groundhog patrol perched in my covered shooting location, a large hog came out @ 70 yards from under a stack of firewood. It was in the neighbors yard and was quickly crawling to a ditch that connects the 2 yards, the target would soon be behind cover.

I quickly adjusted the scope focus to 70 yards zoom to 11 power, third mil-dot down holdover I squeeze off the trigger. INstead of a resounding thump, I hear a distant thud and the hog reels around clawing at its right front shoulder and disappears into the ditch.

A few seconds later a groundhog appear's on a rock pile in the ditch 52 yards away perched broadside. With a quick push of the bolt , I am reloaded focus to 50yd, 2 mil-dot holdover aimimg for the neck. pfft the airgun silently send a pellet downrange and a resounding thump follow's. The groundhog succumbs to 1 shot of the Silent death of my .22 cal Marauder.

Nice shot and nice airgun. I need me a fancy airgun sometime. My current one is good for smaller game but probably not groundhogs.

I love it when a small game hunt has a entertaining story. As hunters, we should be telling more of these types of stories.

I know you are probably in a residential area or you just like using the airgun but when it comes to hogs at my house they get the 22-250 haulin a Vmax. No need in listening for the thump on impact. Just watch for the pink mist.LOL

Thanks, They are very difficult to get a good shot on with an air gun. Even when you see them you have to make a quick shot because they don't stay still very long around here.

Literally there is no comparison. Marauder= Corvette / Sheridan .20 = Model T , The Sheridan is a classic.

I saw one 2 days in a row in the treeline about 70 yards behind my house and thought about popping it with th 17hmr but didn't. Made the mistake of telling my wife I saw one and the first words out of her mouth were "don't shoot it". He better not show up when she's not there. \:\)

Never would have thought you could have killed a groundhog 50 yards away with an air rifle. Impressed.

Lettuce/ ears of corn(stuff from the garden it was eating from). Pretty much the same things that rabbits eat.
