I read in a national outdoor magazine (either F&S or OL) several years ago, that the Duck river was the best kept seceret in America for smallmouth bass fishing. The article spoke highly of the Duck.

shhh! There are no smallies worth catching in the Duck! WingNut was just kidding about those 4-6lb'ers!

Catman, if I were you I would park a truck at the bridge where you found the boat and drive up river and put in at Sowell Mill Pk and float back down to Howard's Bridge.

I take half of the tackle shop when I go fishing, but if I could only carry one box of tackle down that stretch it would be: Zoom 4" lizards(watermelon, grnpmkn, junebug), Zoom baby brush hogs, Yum 2.75 Crawbug,SK Rage Craw, 4" Senko, White buzzbait, 1/4oz white spinnerbait, Rapala floating minnow, slip bobber/circle hook/split shot, and a cast net(don't throw your shiners back, use em'!). I've had good days on live craws and I have days where the yum crawbug would out catch the live 5-1.

thanks for the info. Sowell mill to howard bridge sounds like a fairly decent length for a float. I hear the pressure is hard thru that whole stretch of river though, but I guess anywhere from chapel hill to columbia would be. Driving over howard bridge on Sunday evening, there were quite a few trucks/boat trailers parked there. I'd have to go on a week day preferably.
