My 2 cents...
The putting means the hen saw you and busted you... gobbler got the alert and left too.
Then when you called him back he came looking and didn't see the hen that was calling, so got suspicious and left.
I had one strutting and then making his way slowly toward me one evening and I decided to cluck and purr one last time. For some reason he knew there wasn't a hen there... he started putting and left. but then I killed one in the same field 3 days later.... so keep at it, you seem to be getting real close to killing one and I bet it will happen soon.

Worked a jake for like 45 mins. He walked out into the field about 125 yds away and strutted back and forth. He heard the calls but never came to look. I have my decoys about 20 yards inside the woods at the field edge. He stood out there and strutted and gobbled but I think he found a hen walking around and followed the path back into the woods she was going. I am wondering if I should move or stay put

I ended up slowly moving myself about 10 yards into the woods and the decoys at the field edge and will see what happens.

Look at it this way - it could be worse. You could have overslept like me and missed the morning hunt!
