Today is quiet. I heard two gobbles earlier this morning but no hens at all compared to usual

Ok about 20 mins ago I finally heard a gobble. Cutt and called. One came up behind me and was closing in. I peaked around the tree and saw his head barely about 30 yards behind me behind some fallin timber. Then a hen or something started clucking and he went the other way and I lost sight of his head. I am so mad.

HAd another or the same one start gobbling Got him down in view. He looked around then turned around and went the other way. I followed behind keeping distance. He gobbled then went into a field way out where I watched him walk across off into the woods. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and why they don't wanna come to calling

Sounds like you did everything right you just got busted. It happens to everyone. It sounds like your doing real well for your first season! It took me a couple years to seal the deal on my first gobbler.

If it were me I would set up to where as soon as he is in view he is in range. Make him have to come over that rise to look for that hen. Call enough to get his attention then be quiet. If he gobbles at you a few times after calling he knows your there, hush. If you set up in a way that he can come in with a clear line of sight he isnt going to see the hen hes looking for and bust out of there on you again. A gobbler will have a deeper putt than a hen. If thats what you heard that ws him. If you get him gobbling and then he just stops for no reason you have one of two things going on. He is either b- lining straight away from you or he is sneaking in to you. Give this situation time and more than likely he will show up. Or you could just bushwhack him.\:D Good luck man.

Thanks...yeah the first one I might have got busted. He was sneaking up behind me...i should have never tried to peak around the tree i was sitting against. The second one just liked my calls and finally answered. He would answer again and move down hill. I heard how far away he sounded and moved a few yards and called again. He sounded better then so I stayed put. Called and cutt, he came down the hill a little way. I saw a hen that I thought was him and man did I ever get a sudden burst of tunnel vision when I spotted her...then i heard him over the hill again gobble...so I called and got him in a little closer and finally saw him. He wasnt strutting..he did semi strut once with his fan..then looked around and started back up the hill. I had my decoys out as well before he came down. When he turned around he still went up the hill and gobbled....i got up and tried closing in. Never saw or heard him, and spotted him out in the field. So I moved up to the edge of the field...he sounded like he was putting if it was him. I watched him bob his head and walk across the field and out of sight into some distant woods.

Thats the secret to setting up right there! It took me years to figure that if you set up where he cant see your calling location until he is in gun range your odds of putting your tag on him go way up!

thats understandable ...I just dont really understand I guess how you can do this in an instance when one is hot and headed your way. I think you would have more luck doing that if you know where they are roosted and can set up previous to flydown. Unfortunatly I have no clue where they are roosting...but they always end up gobbling on this part of the land at some point.

Nothing is certain in hunting, turkey hunting especially. It is hard to get set up on one like this when it is spur of the moment and he is hot. More times than not you have to take what is given in this scenario and hope it works out. This is when your camo and stillness pays off. Also if he can see straight in to your setup I would not call any even with a mouth call. He will pinpoint you every time.

They can see pretty dang good. And on top of that they are pretty spooky most of the time. I have had only a handful of those early morning pefect hunts. The ones where they gobble like crazy the whole time, fly down and run right straight in. Patience and the lay of the land is what has gotten the biggest part of mine killed. Some say call loud and aggressive some say soft and not so often. IMO if you can make one call that they can hear, they will come eventually if interested at all. Its all a big chess match man.

My 2 cents...

The putting means the hen saw you and busted you... gobbler got the alert and left too.

Then when you called him back he came looking and didn't see the hen that was calling, so got suspicious and left.

I had one strutting and then making his way slowly toward me one evening and I decided to cluck and purr one last time. For some reason he knew there wasn't a hen there... he started putting and left. but then I killed one in the same field 3 days later.... so keep at it, you seem to be getting real close to killing one and I bet it will happen soon.

Worked a jake for like 45 mins. He walked out into the field about 125 yds away and strutted back and forth. He heard the calls but never came to look. I have my decoys about 20 yards inside the woods at the field edge. He stood out there and strutted and gobbled but I think he found a hen walking around and followed the path back into the woods she was going. I am wondering if I should move or stay put

I ended up slowly moving myself about 10 yards into the woods and the decoys at the field edge and will see what happens.

Look at it this way - it could be worse. You could have overslept like me and missed the morning hunt!
