A buddy of mine 'barked' a squirrel once just like you described on one of our huntin trips. It was totally by accident though. The squirrel flew straight up into the air.

I heard they would do it so the lead would stay in the tree then they would climb up and dig it out and melt it down and use it again.

I read a article about bark'n when I was a kid in high school (in the 80s).

It read that they ate every part of the squirrel include'n the brains & cheeks, & by shoot'n the tree limb to kill the squirrel it didnt waste any meat.
When I was just a baby, my mama told me son, always be a good boy, dont ever play with guns.
