I read that Daniel Boone used to kill Squirrels with a technique known as "Barking." He would shoot the bark underneath the squirrel and the concussion and bark shrapnel would kill the squirrel. Obviously, they were using muzzleloaders then and that would destroy the meat, but I've never heard of this technique. Anyone familiar with it or heard of it or seen it in use?

I've shot at a "barking" squirrel with my bow because it wouldn't shut up, but that's about it.. \:D

yeah the only barking of squirrels I know of is the kind when a big grey or fox squirrel sitting in a tree wont shut up.

My buddys and me used to try it sometimes in our younger days. The object was to try and kill the squirrel with out breaking the skin. I don't know of any other reason we did at times other than just to see if we could.
We would also ring shot gun shells from time to time in attempts to pull off legendary(in our own minds!) shootin feats.... \:D
