My new lease is exactly an hour and 45 minutes from my house, it is a haul so out I left at 4:15ish this morning. I pull up to the gate where I had planned on hunting and threw my crap on and headed for a ridge top about a half mile away. To make a long story short I walked and called all morning and about 10:30 decided to swing back by the truck, refill on water, and head to the other end of the property to look for some fresher sign to sit on. I kill a couple bottles of water and set out to walk towards a big green field that I knew was on the place and surrounded by big pines that ought to offer shade for a hot bird. Well I walk for a good while just slipping along and calling every now and then when I hear the spit but not the drum of a turkey and then catch movement just around one of the curves in the road and I mean CLOSE. I guess he heard me walking and calling and was coming to me but he never gobbled to give up his location. I stepped behind a tree, raised my gun, flipped the safety off and let him keep coming to me. He stepped out in full strut from behind a big pine and I sent a swarm of Nitros to make his day. I almost blew his head off. \:\) I had nothing else to do so I just sat down next to him, said a few prayers, and soaked it all up for about 30 minutes before I ever moved him or did anything. On the way home I come up on an old guy that had just had a motorcycle wreck. He was skinned up but ok, the motorcycle was crushing his ancle under the running board so I got it off of him and back out in the road. He was ok and his bike was ok minus a little road rash.

Rolled up at the club this morning at about 5:45 and received a text from the only other turkey hunter in the club that he killed one yesterday afternoon and was taking the day off. That means we killed 3 off of it yesterday. I went ahead slipped in to where I was planning on going and set up about 30 yards off the edge of a food plot close to where I killed my bird yesterday. The birds are using the area big time from the sign I have been seeing in the pines and I hoped for the best. I sat there calling off and on until about 7 and decided to get up and do some slipping around and try to drum something up. Well I walked maybe 300 yards and come up on some fresh sign in the pines that had either been done late yesterday evening or early this morning. I decided to back off the road and set up and just call for a few minutes and see what happened. I set down facing the logging road and pulled out my Rocky Top Glass over Slate and started cutting on it and yelping on a mouth call. I figured what the heck I haven't heard anythign all morning, maybe I will drum something up. I set the call down and maybe 4 or 5 minutes go by and a crow flies directly over me just raising hell and makes a gobbler sound off directly behind me at maybe 100 yards. I spin on the tree and flip the safety off, maybe 5 seconds go by and here he comes in half strut coming through the pines. He stepped out into the open and I introduced him to Mr. Nitro and Mrs. Rhino.

I will let my buddy Matt post his story up himself on his bird, but after he got his bird we walked around and made a loop through the club and didn't get any responses. I was content at just heading back home and calling it a weekend after 4 days of hunting and getting him his bird, but he wanted to run by some family land of his that turned out to be a good move. I owe him one now. \:\) The place is only 40-50 acres maybe, but it is a horse farm with some good property around it. We pull up and I get my stuff on and we head out to the "woods". Which is nothing but pretty clear pines really on the backside of it and set up. I made one set of calls and waited maybe 5 minutes and I thought I heard drumming. I am thinking no way this is drumming I am hearing. It gets louder and loader until I KNOW it is drumming, but couldn't see it. Turns out it is coming in a line to me right behind a big pine that is close to me and I can't see around it. By this time Matt is hearing it, but he is facing straight away to watch my back/the open horse pasture. \:\) I let him come on into about 40 yards and give him a dirt nap. I bet we were not there 15 minutes total. We high fived, took pics of both birds, and made us up some sandwiches. What a great day in the woods, one of the best I have ever had if not the best. I have seen 4 birds die in 4 days, I hope the rest of the season and states go the same way.

2012 #2 - This was a hunt to remember. My son and I went on a 2 hour stalk on this bird which included crawling down a gravel road, walking in a ditch, and setting up in three locations before closing in. The closest we could get was 50 yards...out of reach for his .410. I was about to be busted, so I knocked the dust off of him. He hung with me the whole time on a tough hunt. I know he picked up a few skills.

Congrats Justin on your two birds! I love the pic with your boy in it. He's a trooper if he stayed with you on that jaunt.
