Loc: Southern Wayne CO and NW Alaba...

Like last year, I've spent more time running young dogs and figuring out which are staying and which are going. I was down to two older gun dogs this year and a bunch of 1.5 yr old dogs that I need to cut down by spring's end. Been trying to start two dogs also. One finally started yesterday.

I did make a few hunts and tried to do a few really good ones. I traveled to south Georgia again around Dublin, GA and we hunted 1.5 days there. It was near 80 both days and it is extremely dry there. Landowner (3600 acres) said it was the worst drought since 1954 but we made the best of it. We killed 15 the first day and 9 the next morning. We would kill a couple then take the dogs to the truck for water and we carried three packs. Had the weather been fit, we'd probably killed 50 or more. The whole farm is made for rabbits. Great combination of crops, long leaf pines and thick ditches. I didn't for some reason take any pics of those 24 rabbits, probably because by lunch of day 2, I had a 7 hour drive home, it was over 80 degrees and I was whooped.

I've posted this pic before but this is from last year's hunt on this farm for one day.

Went to a lease with some friends in Wayne Co last week. We jumped 7 and shot all 7. Just 4 of us and it was thick but rabbits were not hard to come by. Seven rabbits by lunch is pretty good in these pine thickets.

Went to Lacy Springs, AL again this year also. Those river bottoms are full of rabbits. Might be as many as that farm in south Georgia. The field we hunted mainly was a huge CRP field and it was tough to see them but somehow we managed 8, although had we been shoot happy we could have shot 25 or more but most would have been rabbits sneaking out. The first 2 acre thicket we hit we saw 7 different rabbits running out while the dogs were running.

Check out the swamper. That cottontail on the left is a normal size cottontail. I've seen bigger swampers but this one was bigger than normal for sure.

Going places like south GA and Lacy Springs is a treat. We are so used to hunting these thick pine plantations that being somewhere flat and were you can actually walk through the fields is a treat for sure.
