My uncle and another buddy swear they saw a bear in Pickett State Park in the early 70's. It wouldn't be uncommon for bears from ETN and VA to travel to Cumberland Plateau and back, especially during spring and summer. Young males roam quite a bit.

We had a wandering bear come through Giles county in the early 80's. It had been trapped and placed on some island near memphis, it swam from the island and took off wandering.. Our local GW actully followd it down a dirt road for a short distance, luckly there was some snow on the ground at the time and a farmer managed to get one of the tracks left in the snow and scooped it up and put it in a cardboard box, he brought it to the county store and they kept it in the popscicle freezer for people to look at for a long time..

No bears in Middle or West Tennessee. The panthers keep them out, especially the black ones. They will kill a bear in a heartbeat.

It's been 15 years ago but a buddy that lived in Eagleville (outside Murfreesboro) took pics of a bear while out walking his property.

Dang, I thought it was the rattlesnakes TWRA were stocking that killed the bears-even though they stocked the snakes to kill the turkeys. Or was it the hogs?

My wife swears up and down she saw one on her way to work one evening 2 years ago. This would be on the outskirts of the Hatchie Bottom going towards Brownsville on the back roads.I don't have a doubt in my mind that it was a bear she saw.

Saw one in Camden (Benton County) back in the mid-80's..... around June 4th. We were returning from the grocery with my little brothers birthday cake.... TWRA, LEO's, & onlookers' cars lined both sides of our street. Didn't know what was going on at first. We were on the side porch looking at the TWRA officers beating the bushes in the neighbors backyard. They had tranq. guns trying get a shot on it to subdue the black bear.... it came busting out of the bushes not 40 yards from where we were standing and right on past the TWRA guys and the cattle trailer they had brought in to haul it off in..... people were running for their lives when that bear came bolting across the street.... this all happened in the actual town, maybe a mile to mile & half from the square!!

most likelyconfused it with a sasquatch given the location of the encounter

Saw one last week treed by coon dogs in Bledsoe County. Dogs struck just like a coon ran a long race & treed, went to them & they had a Bear treed. This was in the Nine Mile Community in the valley where the track started, treed in out in Valley View.

Back in the mid nineties my ole buddy bronco hunter came to school saying that he had seen a bear in a field in north coffee county. I laughed like you wouldn't believe at him. Well lo and behold maybe a week or two later they killed it or trapped it tullahoma, tn made the paper, so maybe not that crazy. Also seems like I saw the one killed on the interstate in monteagle

I have no proof at all but I believe we have few in the midstate area. I have a friend that lives off of hwy. 100 in Hickman county and everyone on his road has seen a mom and 2 cubs. Claws marks on his tree in his field and a twra agent visit confirmed it is a bear. This is about 4 years ago. I think they are here. I've heard of the bears coming west from the plateau area. Big south fork has them as i frequent that area. A few years back, maybe 2, it was on the news that a bear had attacked and killed a family cat near ashland city (claw marks a dinged up fende on a car as proof). That same week reports were flying south of nashville with sitings as well.
