Before I even think about getting in to any of these discussions I want a defination of average.

The average hunter isn't going to pick up any weapon with a string on it. Most likely they won't pick up a muzzleloader either. So when you are talking about an average hunter you need to state what you are referencing.

I'm not real sure I can even figure out what or who an average bow hunter is? Now, I'm not taking about bow shooters. Anyone can learn to shoot any weapon at a stationary target. What separates a hunter from a shooter is the ability to get close to the deer and control the surge of adrenlin. No one can teach that. That lesson only comes from years of killing deer.

What is average?

Midline is average. The rest are either above or below. Average is nothing more than the total number added up and divided by the total participants.

Therefore, if we have a mean score of 67 and a baseline score of 65, we come to an average of the total of mean and base divided by the number of Mormons in the Baptist Sunday School Board.

That figure, using a Norman Bates surfactant, is then extrapolated to produce a minyan.

I said I was becoming anti-semantic.

I'd say both of you split time between trad equipment and crossbows .
In that case , bowriter is toast . Phil is an above average bowhunter with any equipment , and especially trad equipment . ;\)

Radar is right, skill will prevail when needed, a crossbow will not!

So what you guys are saying is what is in the hands of the hunter doesn't matter. What matters is how good a hunter he is..

What I am saying is this, if I was hungry and needed something kilt to eat, I would much rather have a very skilled hunter with a homemade long bow VS. a greenhorn rookie with the best xgun made! That being said, I have no problems with anybody that wishes to hunt with a xgun, wont affect me either way, to each his own! As a matter of fact I would go as far as to say some people probably SHOULD use a xgun, some just simply dont have the skills or wont work to attain them with a BOW!

Wincheaster,

If I was hungry and needed something killed to eat I would take the crossbow away from the rookie and give it to the skilled hunter. That would up my odds considerable. When the rookie learns to "hunt" with the long bow then he can use the crossbow.

Hunting skill supersedes weapon type all of the time. It is not the weapon that makes the kill it is the hunter.

I agree with that . Given equal equipment of any type , the better bowhunter will prevail .

Exactly my point, and I agree 100% when same weapons are used, definitely not Rifle vs. Bow however, no comparison.
Next ? DJ, if you would give the xgun to the skilled hunter when needing a kill, then are you saying that a xgun has an advantage over a bow when used by the same hunter????

If I needed meat. If it was critical to survival, given the choice between a compound, a crossbow or trad. bow, I would take the crossbow every time.

But if I knew no shot would be over 25 yards, it probably wouldn't make much difference to me. (That is assuming I could still shoot compounds or trads.)

What I was trying to point out, thought I did point out, was that when shots are limited to 25 yards, hunting skill is far more important than equipment.
