Washing a wool coat

Anybody here have a wool hunting coat that they hand/machine wash gently? My wonderful wife got me an LL Bean wool hunting coat for father's day, but upon receiving it I noticed that it said "dry clean only." I have issue with this as,
A: I am cheap and do not want to pay for dry cleaning
B: I do not like the inconvenience of having to take it to the dry cleaners to get it washed, especially if it needs cleaning in the middle of hunting season
C: I want to avoid the wear of these chemicals on the garment
D: I do not want to have the smells of dry cleaning on the garment.
I understand that the coat has to be measured/mapped out for drying so that it will not shrink/misshape. But I do not see that there could be any harm in cleaning it if it is designed to be a serious-duty hunting coat that is advertised to maintain its insulating abilities even when wet. Any thoughts or experiences???

Honestly, for wool just sprinkle it with baking soda then leave it outside all night during a good rain! Bring it inside and let it air dry for a couple days.
Can't get any cheaper than that,

If it says dry-clean only and you wash it, you will probably have a nice gift for your son.

If it says dry-clean only and you wash it, you will probably have a nice gift for your son.
As long as you just use cold water and NO heat, the wool should NOT shrink up any. If it did then the first thing it would do when you get caught in a rainstorm is turn into shrink wrap on you. Dry clean is just that, no steam or heat. THATs why mfgrs want you using it. But I've never had a problem with rain and baking soda on ANY of my wool and I have alot of it. I save all the goretex, thinsulate and nylon clothes for the nastiest of weather but for cold, clear or even snowy weather give me WOOL!

I wash mine in cold gentle cycle and then let air dry. No problems with shrinkage.

i've got three or four wool shirts. i was them in cold water and then your can stretch them back out and hang to dry.

I've got a Columbia wool hunting jacket, wool pants and wool bib. They all say "dry clean only" on them also, but I'm too cheap for that...and I figured that the deer would smell the dry-cleaning fluids.
I just wash them in the regular hunting scent-free detergent in the washing machine in COLD water on the gentle cycle. I let it hang dry. DO NOT put you wool in the dryer, or it will shrink.
It does usually take my wool things a couple of days to fully dry...so don't wash it the night before the hunt and expect it to be g2g (good to go) the next day.

I have a Maine wool hunting coat and overalls. I just soak mine in cold water in the bath tub with some baking soda and let air dry.
I like the sound of that rain method!
