yeah rusted and duct tape goo all over it....it's a 30.06...the only reason i bought the gun for $100 before i even knew it was a weatherby was because it had a Leupold VariX III 4x10x40mm scope on it, which is worth well over $100 bucks.

HS is a brand of stock - Have owned several of them. Believe Remington used them on some of their rifles?

I love wood stocks, but on my hunting rifles, I use HS precisions and if I can I will upgrade to Mcmillan. I also change the triggers out to Timney.

$100 for a Vanguard with a Leupy on it? You must be livin right! 
Screw a synthetic stock, that stock has PLENTY of potential and life in it. As bad as the duct tape was it at least protected the wood itself. Stripping and refinishing is easy. The wood has great character and grain. I'd keep rubbing in light coats of linseed until it quit taking them. Then for the metal refinishing I'd go with a professional T-coat or something impervious to anything short of nuclear war but if you are just deadset on cheap and DIY then I'd go with a good matte or even be really unique and go with an antique brown like many old muzzleloaders. I know from restoring my 16ga A-5 a few years ago, rust bluing is also a TOUGH finish that looks better with age.
Love the ol Wbys and you are in yours so cheap you have plenty of options!!!

A coating other than the bluing you used that doesn't need to be anywhere near this beautiful weapon. I think it turned out great the way it is and wouldn't change anything. But, maybe that's just me.

How did you sand it and not ruin the checkering? I maybe need to look closer, you checker it yourself? Looks very very nice.
A Weatherby South Gate is rare and for 100, a treasure. I was there when the riots happened and Weatherby left South Gate, a very sad day. Now, they are up in San Luis Obispo after a brief stay in Orange COunty I believe.
Having tried this and failed, my hat is off to you.
