Ok so here is the question. I am looking to buy my 12 yr old a rifle. I would really like to have something that is full size but a youth stock is available that way when he gets older I can just swap the stocks out. Any ideas on which rifle has this ability?

Get him a Remington 700 youth model in 243 or 308. Then when he gets older you can get him a full size stock off of ebay for cheap. You occasionally run across a youth stock for a 700 on ebay but they go pretty high. Regular stocks are a dime a dozen.

Is everything else the same as far as receiver and all going from youth to full size?

I would have to agree. I bought a youth model 700 in .308 because of the price. I put a hogue stock off the tactical model on it, and it is nice. I could always put the youth model stock back on for the kiddies. I believe the barrel is 20" instead of 24" like the long action or 26" like the magnum.

Yes. It is still a 700 action just the length of pull on the stock is shorter and the barrel is a little shorter. And the youth models only come in short action calibers (243, 7mm-08, 308). Most Wal-Marts carry the youth 700 ADL. Just make sure its a 700 and not a 770. You definately don't want to waste your money on a 770.

Ruger makes a great 243 and I really like the triple safety action for a young hunter. It makes it a very safe gun and they have to think more about the safety aspect of the gun. My son killed several deer and a hog with his.

You may also want to look at the Remington Model 7. I bought one in .260 Remington for my kids to hunt with. they didn't use it, but I have killed several deer with it. It is a great youth gun.

I always loved my 7mm 08 when I was that age. Ruger M77 (tang safety).

the younger boy got his 7mm08 at about that age(12). he is 23 now and it's still his go-to gun.
