T/C contender carbine in 6.8spc, you can pick up a bantam buttstock for about 30 bucks and later pick up a .410 barrel and a rimfire barrel. The 6.8 in the 23 inch bbl gets velocity close to a .270 with very mild recoil.

.416 Rigby or .505 Gibbs....... Would be bad. +1 on the .243. I know smaller rounds are legal now, but .243 is a soft shooting, hard hitting balance.

7mm-08 beats a .243 hands down, and I'd think the .260 rem would've been good if it would've gotten some popularity.
Just a FYI: I had a New England Handirifle in .243 that would tumble heavier bullets so the guy at Bass Pro said to try lighter bullets. Well, just because the gun started grouping with 75 and 80 grain bullets didn't mean I should've let my son take it to the blind. He only wounded two before I insisted he just shoot my .270 for the rest of the season; no more wounded deer. I'm sure the 95 and 100 gr. cartridges are adequate for average whitetails, but more gun wouldn't hurt.
